Ok guys, believe it or not, the 572 is finally coming together :)devil and I have a question about AC Delco E.O.S. oil additive or Crane cams oil additive for break in. I know these additives are recommended for flat tappet cams, but what about roller cams? Is it necessary? Will it hurt anything?

I also read that E.O.S. and Crane cams additive also help prevent cylinder wall scuffing and help break in the lifters. Would it help? Would it hurt?

As the saying goes--I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I plan on breaking in the engine on some old stock, Rotella 15-40, not the new stuff, so it will have higher zinc and phosphorus leves to begin with. Then after break in, switch over to Mobil 1 synthetic.

Comments/suggestions/recommendations..........

Roller cams do not require it. They don't even require grease during assembly - other than the bearings. Just some engine-oil. Will it hurt to use EOS? Nope, not a bit. Just not necessary. It's your call completely.

I agree with beer30, and plan to do the same break in precedure.


Hows the Married life? I'm guessing not bad if your working on the boat :D

If you are runing the old rotella great but why take chances? Lot's of guys allover bitching about cams going flat on break-in. As far as I am concerned cheap insurance. E.O.S is a great additive and alot cheaper than a tear down and clean-up!!!! IMO M

Old Rotella is fine for break in. Roller cams need no extra additive. I've yet to be at a dyno facility that didn't have Rotella on hand.

Avoid prolonged idling for the first few hrs of operation. Try to fluctuate load and rpms.

I'd pull oil filter after first outing and cut open to inspect.

BTW to flat tappet people: Lucas (products are usually available pretty much everywhere) has a flat tappet cam break in additive in small bottles now.

Hey Outlaw!

Married life is good, and thankfully she "understands" about the boat and how I feel about boating, camping, and racing! She's a keeper for sure! Now that the wedding is over and the dust has settled, I can focus on the boat again.

I still need to get the bungs for the headers and send them to you. What size did we need again? I can get them next week and mail them to you. I might need to borrow those headers next month. :D

All I need now is the ignition. Getting closer....... If I could get rid of the tunnel ram I could finish the ignition. I need to take some pictures of it and post in the spam section when I have time. This weekend we are going to button up the engine, put it in and start plumbing, hopefully plumbing won't take too long. Most of the wiring is complete, just need to wire in a kill switch.

What's up with your boat? Your last email said you hadn't worked on it much.

Can you send me the info on the stud girdle you bought again? I think it was from Teague, but can't find the sheet of paper I wrote the info on. Thanks!

Thanks guys! Like I said, I'd rather have it and not need it, than have needed it and not had it.

As old guy said, "cheaper than a tear down and clean-up!!".
