I recently picked up a real nice barn door unit mostly because the price seemed right and its just really impressive looking. Now what do I do with it? The area of the butterflies is huge. Im in the process of collecting parts for my first blower motor, 6-71 with a bird so i know the mounting pattern wont direct fit to a 6-71. Any info on the use and if parts are available etc. would be helpful. Thanks

I ran an old four port upright Hilborn injectors on my flat for a couple of years and had really good luck with them ounce I got them all dialed in. The only reason that I took them off was you had to know how to start it and I was into water skiing at the time and wanted to be able to let other people drive the boat. The throttle responce was a LOT better than the 850 Holley carbs and the mileage wsn't much different either. I didn't have them set up really rich at idle like you see the race boats, that way I could idle into the five mph areas without killing the plugs.. The one thing that help set it up was using a leak down tester to set the barrel valve.

Barn door is an alcohol injector made to sit on top of a 1471.
It is just not a good application as a gas injector.

You need what he had....a 4 port upright...which were the simplest and best part throttle injector on gas I have ever known. That said....a bug or a bird works also....but never as sweet IMO.

Well since anything like a 14-71 is way north of where I'm going it should look real nice on the coffee table after a good polish and some stainless lines. That cast scoop IS awesome... Thanks for the input.

"Barn Door" means just that. Wide-funkin'-open-throttle, period. You might as well just open your blower entry to the world's atmosphere. :p The rectangular shape makes for a big window(s). Part throttle drivability? Forget it...but that's not what drag racing is about.

Depends what you are doing and what you need.

Fiat, have you ever run the super limited production "Super Barn Door" or "Giant Barn Door" or whatever it's called? It's a bigger version of the Barn Door. Enderle and Pete Jackson offered them back in the day, but suposedly not too many were made or sold as they proved to be too dangerous at the time.

I've only seen two of the "Giant" Barn Doors; one will be used on an upcoming race car. ;)

If what I have is considered a "barn door" (see picture below) then I would have to disagree with you. While I agree that a barn door is not a good choice for a ski boat, they can be driven at partial throttle, I do it without any issues. The only problem I have is getting it to idle down enough. I run a 565ci 14-71 hi-helex on alcohol with an enderle bird and Gerardot butterflys on the river.

No it's not. Yours looks like a modified Bird.

Below is a standard Barn Door:

I'm pretty sure we are talking about injected gas, not injected alcohol and I would have to maintain that the upright stack injection is a better choice for injected gas.

For size comparison purposes, at one point the Barn Door and the Bug were manufactured simultaneously, both being originally created in the 1960's. The Enderle Barn Door flows perhaps a little more air than the Enderle Bug, and was created after the Bug.

All that being said, your modified Bird most certainly has the ability to pass more air than the standard, original Barn Door. And by design, the original Barn Door on MeOH is indeed all about wide open throttle. But "part throttle drivability" is a very subjective term and obviously the overall build under the injector will play a big part.

I'm still learning about all this too.

Yeah I believe those were also taller. I think a local with an alcohol altered here in town still runs one.
Gas deals I always ran the 4 port upright hilborn. The part throttle bypass and the small throats made that the best
gas deal. Also worked with alcohol with only a nozzle change....you could actually fatten the gas spool enough and it would work fine.
Alcohol deals the Bird seemed to be easy to find used....simple block barrel valve. Boats worked good with stock setup but with the drag cars and staging with a converter another bypass helped keep it smooth in staging. The smaller bug should be better for cruise due to the smaller openings.

Yeah I got the secret email. :)grn

Im going to run e-85, forgot to mention that: but the butterfly area differences are substantial. Bug 32 sq.in. bird 45, buzzard59, and the barn door i have is about 65sq.in. I did some internet reading?? that talked about running the barn door on a 6-71. so did they make a unit that was bolt pattern match to 6-71 because these articles were old days drag articles?

I have a question regarding the balance between the throttle area and the barrel valve on a mechanical injection setup.
I don't want to stir up or bash, just so I can be informed and not make assumptions.

Depending on the size of the engine, if the throttle is opened 1/2 way and that's all the air the engine can flow, is additional fuel still injected in the 2nd 1/2 of the throttle travel as the barrel valve continues to open ?

I think that was done all by adapters such as these.

The Barn door in Paul's post is the big Super sized one, not the original much smaller one which I think is around 40 sq, in. The original was a bolt on to a 671 blower opening. Paul has a pic of my old car running that older unit. I ran mine with a hilborn barrel valve & really liked it.
