The K&N's don't flow as well as a modded spark arr. do like Barry said, pull out a few
of the wraps of the tighter screen and go! I never ran an air cleaner inside my scoop
either, but I heard LEO's would get you if you didn't have them....

I did a carb upgrade to a 1150 Dominator last season.

I had to purchace a new filter / arestor and it would only make sense to use of at least as much cfm as the carb, Right?

I contacted 3-4 of the flame arrestor companies; and can you believe that there tech departments could not tell me how many CFM there products were rated for. Believe it or not, I got the "bigger is better" , and "this one has an opening for a Dominator so it should flow enough".

K & N is the only company that I found sizing chart / cfm data. I call their tech dept. and was told that ALL of their filters are constructed the same way, but only a select qty had they paid to have the coast gard approvals. This should lead to reason that any of the K & N filters should perform as a flame arrestor.

BTW, when I actually did the carb swap, I noticed a disturbing amount of dirt inside my "take off" carb . I would have to argue that there is dirt in the air (this was runing with a screen arrestor)

I run a K & N now.

i have 5 3/4" x 3" barbon spark arrestors, with 1 layer of screen. many many years ago, i found some k&n's that slip fit right over the arrestors. been running this way for 15 years. i've had them on on the dyno, and without, and saw no real measurable difference in hp.
but if there's "nothing in the air" for a boat, someone needs to explain me why these things get absolutely filthy in less than a year, bugs and everything else they trap. ask the njba guys at ming, when there's flyin pincher bugs everywhere, including in their carbs, airbleeds, etc.
no thanks. when i pull the barbon's off, the inside of the carbs are clean like new. i like 'em that way. and i also like keeping all that junk out of my engine. just personal choice...:)

Bump...

I am thinking about getting a K&N flame arrestor to replace my OEM unit. Any body else using these? I have a 7.4L Mercruiser. I just need to measure the height of mine to double check the clearance to the hatch. I like the idea of actually filtering out dirty air. Found a great price on Amazon.

Yeah I wasn't expecting to gain any more HP, but definitely want cleaner air to my engine.

How often do you clean/oil it? Every season?
