Currently have a inline pump but it has problems keeping up at high throttle on long runs. Used to run a holley red till the rotor in the motor (not the rotor in the pump) went bad on me. I like the fact that I can hear the fuel pump running when I turn on the key and can hear the bowls fill if they are part empty. Before I just go back to a holley red is there some advantage to a mechanical fuel pump (ie higher pressure and flow) and what are most of you running and why?

Best thing going IMO is an electric pump with a "tank return" system if you can "rig it", most boats do well with a high quality manual pump however Tom

i run a holley in the sw with no return, because it provides enough fuel for my deal at 6 1/2psi.

i turn the fuel pump on to fill the bowls, then shut it off. i start the engine without the pump running, then start the pump. why; many many years ago, some small piece of crap got in the needle valve, i started the pump before starting the engine, and it flooded while i was on the rope. since then, i always start the engine, then turn on the pump. i also switch the pump off, then shutdown the engine. the carb(s) bowls hold(s) plenty of fuel to get the engine started, if it's going to start.
a mech pump is "no worries", as it's pumping from the moment you crank the engine over. but if the engine is hard starting, and some crap gets in a needle valve, the engine can flood very easily.

i like electric pumps, sure makes it easy to adjust floats and refill the bowls if ya runnin outta gas. when i got the nordic from saab, we went out for a test spin to shake the boat down, ran the tank we were runnin on outta gas. i switched tanks and crankkkkkeeeedddddddd on it till the starter died. i went home and trashed the mech holley pump, put on a new starter/ignition switch/battery and a new holley black i changed the spring in to lower fuel pressure. works like a charm! 140gph pump that puts out 7.5psi and will never leave the lil 850 dry:)devil

Running a mechanical on the Moo and an electric on the green one. No problems with either yet, although I do smell some fuel cruising in large no wake zones with the electric (No return line). The Mechanical keeps up with the twin 750's on the Moo just fine, though, with no other issues.

Were that engine to remain the way it is, I'd probably ditch the electric in it, myself. Pretty much a std 454 with an 850 Holley on it. But it's gonna get some serious love this winter in the way of upgrades, and probably gonna lose the electric anyway in this particular deal and get a different kind of mechanical probably. Still in the "is this gonna work" stage on that one!

Sounds good

I will stick with the electric, sounds like it is the safe way to go just in case you drain the tank by accident and have to pour in your emergency gas or if th bowls drain somehow.
