Fuel filter and/or separator before or after pump

Starting to think about plumbing on my daycruiser build... BBC/Holley carb, mech fuel pump..

ive read conflicting stuff about fuel filters and where to put them.

1. Is a filter/water separator a good idea (like the Wix 33405 or FST remote screw on) or a waste ?
2. Read one place that AFTER the pump (under pressure) can start a fire if a leak, but BEFORE a pump can cause vapor lock?

3. some guys I understand run two.

What are people running in their lake boats?
what is ideal?

filter filter

I've always run the filter/H20 separator before the mechanical pump (holley 110). One hallett was -8 lines from tanks to the filter and -8 to the pump (496 with single 950 holley). Current hallett is -10 from both tanks to the separator and a -10 to the mechanical pump and -8 to the carb(565 with single 1150 dominator)
