Looking for ideas on fabricating new pick up tubes for my rig. I have a tank that is not removable and I need two pick up tubes installed. I will be welding two #8 an nipples two a .250 oval plate that will bolt down to the top of the tank using a gasket to seal the deal up. I don't know how to make or what to use as tubes. The plate with fittings will be at the far right of the tank and the tubes need to be in the center as the tank has a sump in the middle. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks SJ

Something I did years ago....glassed in tanks too:




There's a gasket behind the plate. I had a company in town that made allot of parts for off-road race teams do it for me.

Yes alumi.

Check on a thread from Cave ( Jimmy) did his tanks and I think he did a tube(s) down from the top. Not sure if it's here or in the Socal/ Yuma chat room.

Might have missed this but do the current tank have welded /threaded bungs at the rear ? and if so have you "lost" the OE down pipes or ? happy to help just not clear Tom

Tom, the existing pickup tube is still there and complete. It is a single 1/4" npt fitting, I am stepping up the program and need more fuel. Not sure how to make a sturdy dependable pickup. What do you think?

You can succesfully bore that 1/4 pipe fitting quite a bit and "press fit" 5/16 od aluminum (brass or stainless ) tube (standpipe) into that same (bored out) fitting should be enough fuel for a NA deal ( if running tanks tandem) . Re the "non removable" tanks, the only way withstanding actual tank removal to remove and reinstall the fuel pickup tubes (eeek !! ) is to create a small "access hole" directly above the fitting (in the hull) then cover it with a nice plate or repair fill and paint ! (unless you want to cut out the tanks !) call if I can help Tom

i may be missing something here, but, why would u want to pull gas up a tube & then out to wherever?...i have twin 12 1/2 gal side tanks & they have AN fittings in the "lower" back sides with 5/8" hose comeing from each tank to a T & 5/8" hose from the T up to the fuel pump...filters 1 each side before the T & 1 after the T to the pump...1 3/8" hose after the pump to the carb/s...i have never encountered any probs...i use glass see-thru filters, so i can monitor the fuel for whatever might get into the lines from the tanks...this is just my .02 cents & how i run my tanks

I would rather not have to use pickup tubes to draw fuel from but with this particular boat I have no choice. I can't take it from the bottom. I am using one large tank, before I knew I was going with current engine combo I replaced all the rotted wood and delaminated glass holding the tank in. The engine combo is a 509 BBC with a 300 shot. If I can figure the picture deal out I will post some picks to better describe what I am trying to do. I have to run electric pumps becouse I have no fuel pump boss. If some one has a better idea let me know. It will be a deal like jon posted with two #8 or 10 an to two electric fuel pumps, 1 for engine 1 for spray. Thanks Scott

BTW this is not a saddle tank it is one tank that runs from gunwale to gunwale and the back seat sits on top. I have access to the top of the tank with out goin thru the hull. Pics to come maybe?

Oval shaped .250 plate, with .250 backer plate, sandwich the tanks skin. Oval shape allows the inner backer to be installed with in the tank, just two fasteners are needed to retain the backer. Drill, tap backer for 1/4-28 fasteners, transfer holes to tank, install backer with two #6 counter sunk screws, inside tank. Bolt new pick-up plate to tank, with 1/4-28 bolts.

The result will be something like this, but much less elaborate....

Sounds like your on the right track. I played this game 2 years ago when I put my daytona together. The pick up tubes on my tanks were smaller o.d. than a bic pen. On mine I used a # 10 on each side, and then flaired some aluminum fuel line up(5/8 I think), cut to length and bolted em together. As far as the tank....someone on here sugested using the sending unit hole/cap. On one side I pulled the sending unit...welded the #10 in the center. The sending unit was in the center of the tank....so I drilled another hole tword the back of the tank. I made a new cap for the sending unit and sealed them up with some aircraft epoxy made for gas tanks that outlaw turned me onto(I think it was called vans). On the other side I left the sending unit alone but did pretty much the same thing. Btw on that side I used the sending unit gasket...and both sides are leak free.

Excellent info that is what I am looking for. Would a bulkhead fitting thru the oval plate with a flared aluminum tube on the bottom side work? Thanks guys

If I remember right...I just welded in a -10 flair union. but a bulkhead fitting should do the same thing. A tube nut,flair tool, and some 5/8 alum. tubing and your good to go.

fuel pump

Ok got the pick up tube deal figured out. Thanks for all the help. What fuel pump would you suggest for the engine. The existing holley blue will feed the nitrous. BBC 509 estamated 650 hp. Will hit the dyno in a month or so. Two 750 dp on victor ram. Remeber it has to be electric. I have been told electrics don't like to pull fuel but have not had any problems with that. Thanks for all the help SJ
