Ran my boat the first time this summer a couple weeks ago for a short time..ran fine. Took it out the next weekend and after running and idling the boat for about 20 minutes, the Holley Blue pump that's about 15 years old got real hot and stopped pumping. Poured cold water on it a few times and finally made it back to the ramp. Replaced the Holley Blue last week with another Holley Blue, did not change the regulator. Took the boat out yestereday and the same thing happened..exchanged the Holley for another Holley Blue, did not put a new regulator on. Ran today the same thing happened. Pump got hot to touch...waited cooled it down with water and runs fine for a while..then gets hot again. I do not have water in the tanks..filter is clean..get a constant 12.5 volts to the pump. It is also on a seperate switch which is good...can't figure out the problem..thanks..

My experience: I had the same issue with Blues getting hot and locking up. I burned up a few Holley Blues til I started to run a bypass regulator and ditched the Holley regulator. Without a bypass regulator, the pump is working a lot harder pushing fuel up against a wall so to say.

My experience: I had the same issue with Blues getting hot and locking up. I burned up a few Holley Blues til I started to run a bypass regulator and ditched the Holley regulator. Without a bypass regulator, the pump is working a lot harder pushing fuel up against a wall so to say.
It has the original regulator that was on the pump..I did not replace it with a new one that came in the box. I figured the old one was alright..the original blue pump was on there, in the same location for at least the last 10 years, with that holley regulator...I don't see how the regulator could be an issue...I could be wrong...in addition I have cleaned out the manual tank selector switch, disconnected all the fuel lines and they are all clear..drained my tanks to make sure no water is present..it acts like it is vapor locking..but I put the new pump in the same location as the old one..

10 years ago you could still buy quality parts. My next pump will be a Clay Smith.

Don't let the pump dead head. Like said above, quality parts were made 10 years ago. Those new pumps are junk imo. I went through 2 pumps in 2 days on my cruiser engine.

You know I would agree with you except that the 2 new pumps I put on are doing the same thing as the old pump that lasted over 10 years...Is it possible the pressure regulator has something to do with it..I don't see how..it's the only thing I have not replaced..by the way, how much pressure should a BBC 12:1, tunnel with dual 450"s have?..I changed out 660'S a couple of years ago and left the pressure the same...I need a guage..

I would'nt run more than 7 -7.5 psi. You could change out the regulator and see if it is the problem.

Bypass regulator set up on tunnel ram, 660s. Out the bottom of the regular back to the inlet side of the pump.

4 year old holley blue.deadheaded the pump ran great for years.

replaced it with a jegs brand,new regulator also.ran for 10 minutes,screwed up.lost pressure was hot as a mutha f-cker.then started leaking.

replaced that pump with a new holley blue just like i had.this sob is doing the same.

does ,run it for 10 minutes or so gets so hot you cant touch,then the pressure falls off.let it cool down does fine till it gets hot agian.

i have replaced fuel lines, made sure things are clear,no change WTF.:|err

I would go mechanical. I went through a few pumps in my southwind. Now I have a mechanical in my deck, love it.


What to do with the old one? Go to Avi and throw it across the parking lot. :p

well bullshit,i have mine wired into the key switch and i have 12.68 volts on my tester.

again WTF.:)bulb

you guys keep saying mechanical this and that,but what about the others that run electric pump and they have ni problems:|err

You'll find far fewer people complaining about their mechanical pumps than those with electrical. I've never had a mechanical pump fail on anything (not just boats) and I'd be willing to be there are darned few failures it we were to poll.

Honestly.........unless running an electric pump is a necessity, I'd vote mechanical all the way.

i've ran dozens of holley electric pumps of the yrs and have never had 1 fail. those west coast guys see alot more ambient heat than we do trav, they might just be overheating them.

Tech guy said the only other thing it could be is too many amps..not volt related..I don't see how I could have too many amps..same setup for 10 years..unless the new pumps are more sensitive to too many amps and gets hot..??

lol, to many amps will make a pump live longer:D when ya have a low amp issue with any dc motor, it overheats and damages brushes. not sure where the tech guy came up with that bs:p besides, a dc motor is only gonna draw so many amps, no matter how many amps are actually available.

Hey titty (love saying that), did you actually pull the tanks out to check them or you just looked in them to make sure no water. I would seriously look into a venting problem. Most of these tanks have built in vents in the caps (which I do not trust). I made larger vents for my set up. Pop the caps open next time this is happening to you. Also make sure your fuel pickups in the tank did not fall off inisde the tank and are not clogged. Also make sure the ball check anti siphon thingy is not messed up in the factory fitting elbow at the tank.

Problem Solved

Well today I went down and got my 3rd Holley Blue pump..they replaced it without any problems..also went ahead and bought all new fuel lines from my tanks to the filter, and filter to the pump. Put in the new pump and lines and it wouldn't pump at all..So I started blowing on all the fuel lines to see if they were clogged or something...I could hear the slightest air leak coming from the gasket on the fuel filter. Put in another new gasket..problem solved...but I haven't taken the boat out yet to make sure..vacuum leak could have been the whole problem..Wednesday we will see...I did pull the tanks a couple of years ago and had them steamed.
