i installed a set of hardin marine gauges and everything works with the exception of the fuel level. i have it going from the gauge to a 2 way switch, then to the tank sender. the base of the sender is then grounded to the tank fill and then to the ground on the battery.

is this wiring correct and also is there ANY way to test the senders with a meter before i go and purchase new ones that i might not need?

You might want to try grounding the case of the gauge itself. I don't remember much about it, but I had to run a ground wire off the mounting bracket. I am not sure if it was fuel or whatever.

well i guess ill just pull the tanks out, see how the senders look and if i can clean em up. i know the tanks have a bunch of goo at the bottom. (ive been test starting off of a gas can until i can get the tanks cleaned out) and if they still dont work i guess its time to buy new senders as well.

whats the difference between the 2 wire and 3 wire senders?

The gauge should have three wires going to it, one to ignition, one to ground, one to sending unit. Sending unit should have the mounting ring grounded, and the insulated center post going to the gauge sending unit. What is the "switch" all about?

an on/off/on switch to switch between left and right tank.

Sender should not be to the battery, in either case power or ground.
The (I) terminal goes to the ignition switch, the (G) goes to the instrument Ground, and (S) goes to the fuel sender unit. In your case, if switching between two senders, the gauge sender (S) goes to the center terminal on the fuel selector switch.

Each fuel qty sender wire, will go to the side terminals of the fuel selector switch. The fuel qty sender grounds, can be tied to either the forward ground buss, or the back ground buss. The only connections to the battery should be the starter power, and the engine block ground. Any other connections to the battery, are problems waiting to happen.
