I just picked up a 1996 gen 6 vortec 454 for a couple of bucks. Are these worth rebuilding? Are the heads different? Can I run gen 4 or 5 heads on it?? My buddies eliminator has one in it and it runs pretty good....maybe a different set up. Any info would be awesome........thanks

There were some issues swapping heads between the Gen V and the MK IV. The made some changes on the Gen VI to help that situation, but do some more research to be sure. The issue was with the water passages in the block deck near the lifter valley being slightly different and not sealing to the head. There are some special head gaskets available also.

I've got two Gen VI motors, one is 2000 454 HO 425hp motor and the other a GEN VI 2007 502 short block that I have built to 740hp with 9 to 1 comp. The head gasket thing is easy with the Gen VI. just be sure to run the correct head gasket when using Mark IV heads or aftermarket heads.
