OK, so I just bolted on a set of OT headers. I am wondering if I should just run them dry, or install the T valve etc needed. I have the injection lines but thats it. Whats the best way to control the water without a lot of expense? Mostly I want to try these out for a summer before I spend the money on jacketed TT headers. I picked these up used so I'm not too worried about looks. They already have a few ugly spots, although they do look good from 10-20 ft away ;)

run them dry any they will turn blue to the tips and discolor and get quite hot. Other than that, run em.

If you want them wet, just go to bassettracing.com and look at their water diagram

I was checking out the Bassett site on plumbing. Is there a way to run them when I have a thermostat? Or, if I run them dry how close can they be to the transom before it gets dangerous? They are about an inch from a carpeted area, and a couple inches above the transom...
They are already a bit blued, but nothing too terrible. The chrome on the tips is gone in a few areas and a bit of rust...my main concern with running them dry is safety...

I think you'll be suprised how much heat they will radiate. I have a dry set with an 02 in them for tuning. I don't think I'd care to have them on when it's 100* outside. As far as plumbing with a thermostat, I'm pretty sure rex has a diagram on his page where his thermostat kit is listed.

run the water lines.most lakes or rivers have some kinda police,they lookfor something,so running water quites them and reduces some heat.if yours are jet coated,mine are,then also un water,but when you ant to race or just mess around,they dont stay hot for long.peps in the back seat also feel the heat,its less with jet coated headers.

We recommend you run them wet for both saftey , and law enforcement ramifications , we do plumb all our headers with a positive manual control valve prior to the traditional "failsafe" T-valve. I mount my manual valve at or near the driver seat for ease of operation and to control/limit the amount of water thru the headers . The T-valve will typically control the "forgot" factor but are subject to "fowling" I shut the water completely off in the five zone at idle and on WOT pass's . Water injected headers do not take an enormous amount of water to run properly , too much water can result in reversion issues. The heat from dry headers will actually cook the adjacent paint and burn fiberglass as well as Skin :mad: PS running with a T stat/bypass system is not a problem Call if we can help Tom

Listen to tom. I branched my header supply out of the feed line from the pump to the motor, i just put a gate valve before the header tee to regulate the amount of water, and the tee bought the farm once, and i just barely cracked the valve and ran the rest of the weekend.

Here are some pipes i own. These were obviously ran dry.



I have also run dry headers, by accident :|err, the heat coming off those SOB's is intense. It makes the back seat very uncomfortable even at speed.

Thanks for all the replies!! If it's just a matter of T-ing off the supply line I will go ahead and run them wet. I dont usually carry back seat passengers but I definately dont want to scorch anything!!

P.S. Will have a pressure reg affect anything? Should I just T off of the line after the regulator? Or can I T off of the regulator bypass hose?

It's not the supply line, but the exit side of the engine where you want to tap into for your header water. A regulator is cheap insurance, and won't affect anything, but I would still run one line to the engine, and have two outlets with one going overboard and the other going to the Bassett T-valve for the headers.

But if I am running a thermostat, wont that affect the water on the outlet side of the engine-to the headers? I am thinking I can T off the regulator bypass hose and go to the headers from there. Then my water going to the engine wont be changed at all...
