My neighbor has a jet boat..recently purchased with rebuilt 454 (motor has about 5 hours on it) with original 1978 block..Edlebrock almn. heads. Mild build single Holley. He has an electric oil guage that always reads 80 lbs. even after motor is warm. We thought it might be the guage or sending unit so we tried a mechanical guage...same reading. Using 30 WT. oil..Has a 10 qt pan and running 8 qts..had 10 in and took 2 out just to see if it would change..stays at 80 lbs at idle or WOT..What is the possible problem or what can happen if you run pressure this high all the time..

last motor i built had 90 no matter what on a machanical gauge :D good tight motor in my book.maybe someone else will say diffrent. over time it should drop a lil at an idle.

How cool is it running? If you build heat it will go down. Oil pressure isnt a problem, no oil pressure....thats a problem.

Idle at 140..drops at full throttle..we played with the water temp and it had no change in pressure..still stayed at 80 lbs..

Also is it possible the pressure relief valve is stuck in the oil pump has been suggested?

One distinct possibility is that the internal oil pump is continuously blowing the bypass valve (bypass set at 80 psi). By that, I mean that the engine clearances could be so tight that the engine's oil bleed-off rate never exceeds the oil pump's pumping volume, and so the pump is continually bypassing the additional oil since the 80 psi is being met regardless of engine rpm.

80 psi in-and-of-itself is not too much oil pressure, but if that's what is happening in your engine (continuous bypass), it's not the end of the world but it's also not how the oiling system is really designed to work (not meant to be in continuous bypass but only to bleed if peak pressure is exceeded).

So do you think it is safe to run like this for the rest of the summer and then pull the motor and mess with the oil pump this winter or should he just not run the boat because there is a chance of internal damage and seal issues...thanks..

you should be able to pull the filter and filter adapter and knock out the bleed valve. Tap it and put a plug in it. You will also have to put on a oil filter with a bypass built in...like a WIX or something. Info should me this trick

That's probably what happened, but is there a big downside to just running it the way it is..

The only real issue is the oil gets heated a little more than it normally would by being bypassed back into the pump inlet. Not really in adverse problems. Just using more power than it needs to pumping the uneeded extra oil. But I would seriously consider using a multi wt like Mobil 1 0/40. I don't recommend Mobil 1 10/30 any more specially for flat tappet engines, due to to a formula change in June. But the their 0/40 kicks ass.
