Does an inducer affect the horsepower requirements of an impeller? Or does it only affect low RPM power and have little to do with top end?
My boat is a pretty heavy lake cruiser, so I take it an inducer would help get out of the hole but also let me "get away" with a fatter impeller for efficiency? I still have a 455 olds so I have torque but need to keep the rpm low/reasonable.

If your pump is in good shape and still cavitatiing out of the hole it would help. They do not hurt the top end, but the larger impeller for effeciency also helps the hole shot a lot. So if leaning towards a larger impeller, I'd try it first. It may be all that you need. If you do need an inducer, we have a new one on the market That blows the orig one away.

My wording was bad. I should have said we're going to have the new one soon. We'll keep you informed. We hope to finish testing in a week or so. This kind of stuff takes for ever to produce.

I did some testing on Henery's inducer, and it works good. I sent him the first data results, but have not heard back from him since. We ran it in 4 different boats and 4 different HP ranges and recorded all runs. 3 in each boat. Results were positive.

Other than the original Don Bowers' inducer, I'm only aware of two other's that are made ... Kimball's CnC'd version and the cast one the Henry & Jack McClure have come up with here recently.

Duane, adding an inducer will not rob the top end? I was thinking of adding one and past up a good deal on a cnc version. Don't know who's making it but I passed because I didn't want to loose any top end performance.

Anyone running them in a 21 Daytona or Daytona splash have any info regarding top end performance ?

Slim what pump and impeller do you run ? I've been told depending on the boat that an inducer can cost you a few mph on the top end, but will get you out of the whole much quicker. It's a trade off.

If I had the time I'd sure like to run our boat with and with-out to see, every boat is different. With the inducer in it won't hold back a flat foot from a dig but I can roll it over and bury it and it just flashes before it grabs. ( 765 lbs. ft trq on the dyno at 6,000 or 875 HP )

known henry for about 9 years now. just a guy from delaware that owns a bunch of jets, some of 'em fast, one of 'em with a gas turbine. he usually comes out to the firebird opener and wf's to hang out. some years, races his daytona at augusta - probably will be at hipoint this year.
henry has always come up with different ideas with many parts, and has the ability to run his ideas into production if he chooses. he showed me his inducer idea at the opener this year - there are subtle differences between his and the old dps.

but... i've been running an mpd blueprinted dps cavitation reducer for 12 years now, it works, so i see no reason to change.

In addition to what I said above, I am aware of a current R&D project that is directed at coming up with a device (not an inducer as the design concepts being used are very different than that of inducers) that will load an impeller more efficiently throughout the 1/4 Mile.

Currently two devices, one a 'Sportsman' version, the other a 'Pro-Boat' device are in the final stages of fabrication and I'm told that initial testing and refinement of the sportsman version should begin here in the very near future. Note that testing and refinement of the sportsman device could take some time as what's being crafted is very different than has been done before and care must be taken.

Testing etc. of the pro-boat device will take a considerable bit longer as the device being made is for a particular impeller of a particular 1/4 mile boat that is currently being modified which takes time and care.

Knowing the people involved in this project, I'm sure that if at least the sportsman device shows significantly positive results and can be made and sold at a reasonable price, then they may well be made available to others via one very reputable source. Additionally, if the final results of testing and development work show no significant gains, then I'm sure the pieces will become 'Shop Art' and nothing more will be said about them.

As to the ultimate availability of the 'Pro-Boat' Device (if it proves itself) to others than the team that has designed the piece and is funding the project ....... at this point, I don't know the answer as it's totally up to the race team's owners.

I'll pass on more about the project as is appropriate .....

S CP,
I have a box stock C pump with an A impeller. Wear condition is unknown. I also picked up a rebuilt C pump with an AB. I am going to see how it goes with the A before I do anything.

For power I am currently have a very mild 455 with J heads, also have a little more power in a fresh 455 with K heads and cam. I am waiting till end of season to put in the fresh engine. I may sell it and build something hairy over the winter though.
