Just wondering how much power you can expect to see out of a well built two blot main 454.

Reason im asking is because im starting a build soon and im trying to decide wether or not i want to get a 454 or 502. Im leaning towards a 454 because the blocks are way cheaper and i think 650hp isnt hard out of a superchargerd 454. havent fully made up my mind yet. My other question is how much power can you pull out a 2 bolt 454 vs a 4 bolt. Once again 2 bolts are cheaper and easier to find.any one run a two bolt with a supercharger, or should i not even bother and only look for four bolts.

The simple answer is the power is the same.

It's the longevity and durability that will vary, based upon the surrounding components and what is being asked of them.

Have a friend who has a 496 two bolt in a 4000# Chev Blazer 4x sand drag truck. It makes a bout 700 on engine, and they hit it with a 250 shot regularly. Turn it 8000 sometimes. When it came apart for a rebuild you could see the mains were walking all over the palce, but it stayed together and the bearings looked pretty darn good...considering they beat the crap out of the poor thing for a year.
It's all in how much attention to detail you're willing to give it when you build it. The better the build, the longer it'll last.

I know build quality is everything which is why im taking my time with it and doing it right the first time. I just dont know if a two bolt is worth it, but they are so much easier to find. im not asking for a race motor, just something reliable and strong that can deliver around 650hp that will last. i just wasnt sure if its possible with a two bolt. what Gen block would you recommend or does it not matter.

I ran a 2 bolt making over 775 for a few years with good success! All stock block BBCs have there limits 2 bolt or 4 bolt!

Couple of thoughts, how long do you want to run at 650hp? What a combination will take as an ultimate number and for how long are tied together. In a drag application a Gen 4 two bolt will live at around 600Hp. You have already heard from members who have pulled more power and lived. Did a street/strip car with 2 bolt block once. It was normally aspirated and pulled about 650Hp at 6500 Rpm Milled the caps flat and added a piece of square stock that had been surface ground. Replaced the bolts with studs. Ran the engine a couple of years with no issues. Not saying it was best way to go just was what we did. There are kits to convert 2 bolt to 4 bolt. By the time you add in the machine cost, it may be simpler to just look for 4 bolt block. Just my .02 but you are generally better off to put as strong a foundation in an engine build you can. That way when you get the itch for few more Hp, you have a bottom end to support it.

Also, why not convert the 2bolt- to a 4 bolt? I have a few sets of caps u could try out. I know it would require more machine work, but may off set the time looking for a block.

:))THumbsUpx2 in my case i got a two bolt ,steel four bolt caps ,machine work (drilled taped line bored) for less than a good four bolt block goes for in my area anyway and its got the better caps

That was another option i was considering but im in no real rush to get a block if i find a good deal on a 4 bolt probably just go with that, but then a gain if i can get a two bolt really cheap might just convert it. I need to save enough cash first. From what ive heard from everyone it seems like that would suit my needs fine.
To answer your question fastmarlene probably will run it like that until it dies or has problems if i see the speed numbers i want.

A two bolt block with added splayed 4 bolt caps is ultimately stronger than a stock 4 bolt setup. Just sayin'. Jocko

Like i said before, im nor building a race motor, just something that gives me the power i want and will be reliable. If a coverted 2 bolt works and is cheaper then that might be my route. I have some time to decide though. Any one running a throttle body efi set up. Would like to for the ease, reliability, and fuel economy but dont know if its worth it. Alot of $$$

Call Shaw city engines in fresno. You can get a CBC machined block with 4 bolt mains for $800 ready to go with any good core 2 or 4 bolt.
