I'm pretty sure that I've read that you don't have to run the valves everytime you take the boat out with a solid roller cam, but the guy I got my boat from said he had to every time with this setup. It's a 13:1 475 BBC with Brodix BB2 Plus heads, Lunati solid roller 278/286 @ .050, .718/.721 lift. I have a card with the specs and showing 25/27 hot lash. I'm sure it'd be safer to check them every trip out, any suggestions?

lash them at home, go run the boat and check them when you get home. try to check them at the same temp and note how much they move, if at all. If they don't move then you probably dont need to check them that often.

I check mine often (shaft rockers) and the lash rarely changes. Still, I check them before every time I run the boat just to keep tabs on the valvetrain.

CD,

It is a good idea to keep a regular check on the valves as it gives one a chance to do a valvetrain inspection, but you should not have to check them each outing unless you just really run the crap out of the poor engine.

You may want to check them at first to see if they are moving and get a feel of the process. If the lash is changing, you are going to want to know why. If you check them and find thelash is indeed not changing, then you can extend intervals. Grammy's lake boat valvetrain is real stable and I only checked it two or three times over the summer, generally at the same time I changed the oil.

On the race car, we check them each pass, but it is not because the valves need adjusted per say, but is a routine maintenance item, a time for inpection of rocker arms, lash change due to stretching valves, checking springs and lubing pushrod cups, rocker arms and tips. The race car also has a much more agressive cam profile and Nitro can be tough on valves if they get too hot.

The more often you check, the more likely you are to catch something before it become catastrophic. Tight, maybe tuliped valve, possibly from detonation. Loose, over and over, the roller going away, rocker bearing is toast. We check between every race. Seems like a pain when there is no change, but no change is good. You do it often enough, and it goes pretty quick. Specially with 2 people. One turn the motor, the other running the valves.

if set-up properly i say you shouldn't have to mess with them more than a couples times over the summer.

the ole mans 505 with a straub roller little over .700 cnc Brodix heads and such.

i run them once at the beginning of the season and around the 4th of July, very little change if any, then towards the end.

it has brodix stud girdles to,that might help:)bulb

we run the shit out of it also:)

every great once in awhile you'll run into a new engine set-up that the pushrods dont fit the lifter cups very well and you'll run the engine 10seconds, shut it off and recheck lash only to find they allllll changed. the pushrods will make their way deeper into the cups and open up lash of course:)st comp lifters seem to do that alot if you've got manley pushrods, seen it on 2 diff engines in the past 4-5yrs

just givin ya some crap. Hows that new rig comin ?

Oh, and check your lash every trip at first then if it stays put check about every other trip. If something starts to go away you want to catch it as quickly as possible. Valve train isnt something to be lazy about.

I like playing with this stuff, so sometimes I'll just get up early in the AM, have my coffee, and go check my lash. I've been known to wake up in the middle of the night wandering around the house with feeler gauges in my hand, sleep walking. That's a little disturbing.
Lash should be checked when you get your mail, and evey time you get gas. I don't mind checking in the morning, and then during the heat of the day...you never know what a few tenths of lash change can do. Oh, and every time I change lash, I immediately get on then dyno to document the difference.
I'm also careful to measure my feeler gauges to ensure that the settings are consistent from one check to another. I've seen as many as .3-.4^6 difference, and that's going to cause problems if you don't catch it. This is for my personal weekend stuff...
On racing engines I'm a little more careful. :)hand

We usually boat all weekend here so I usually run through mine about every other weekend unless I hear or fill something aint right:D .. I'd say keep a check on it just to be on the safe side .. We got 1 guy that runs the hell outta his boat every weekend and has never touched his .. I have ask him if he checked his lash, He said "WHATS THAT, I JUST PUT GAS IN THE THING" ... I cant do that:)hand

I checked mine 2 x this year whether it needed it or not. LOL
This is bad practice, though.
How often depends on camshaft profile, springs, rpm, application, valvetrain (lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, etc.)
I run Jesel stuff and it does not change. Iron heads. I'd recommend every race weekend if a drag application. If nothing moves, great, if it is, make notes to see what is going on and where.

I often wondered why you would have to check valve lash on a solid ? If you have a good set of locks and your engine is running close to the same temp. I do not understand what causes them to loosen up ? I think a good set of locks and girdles will take care of the hormonics ? But i don't have a clue ..

You don't ever HAVE to check your valves..... just like you don't HAVE to use a condom when you hit a hooker. It's just a really good idea and there's really NO downside.... :)sphss

I will take your word on the "Hitting the Hooker" comment, and I already check valves regularly.:)hand

I don't know where you are getting your information but most Hookers (atleast the one's I've dealt with) all require the use of a condom (except for Lucky...he's a bareback kinda guy)
God help us if they go Union..........
