The boats a 79 Hondo Ski Hydro, 427 BBC, 11.5:1 ,1 - 1050 Dominator, 12 deg w/ 22's, shaft angle 7 deg.
Here's the delima.
Converting inboard to outboard dual rudders and wanting to move the motor forward to get wieght forward to help pop the tail.
If I move the strut and prop back to the transom, I gotta move the v-drive back about 8 in. in order to maintain 7 deg shaft angle and same prop to hull clearance. The motor is about 32 in from the transom. If I move the motor forward 6 in. and the v-drive back 8 in. my driveline is only gonna be 6 in. PTO to PTO. If the shaft angle is 7 deg and the v-drive is 12 deg than the drive line should be 5 deg from the hull, (it's almost parralell) I could add 3 deg to the driveline to get clearance b/w the oilpan and shaft below it. A total of 8 deg. from hull. Or I just leave the v- drive where its at, lenghten the shaft, build new strut to match the shaft angle to hull clearance, and move the motor forward 6-12 in.? Whats more benifital, move the motor forward, move the prop back or prop to hull clearance? Am I thinking in the right direction?

Move the prop and strut back and use a cleaver prop. You could mill a 1/2 or one degree off base of strut to decrease angle. How much hp does your engine have?

I would consult Rattle Can Lou for the proper angles and adjustments.

The right way is to build a new strut, with the correct depth, the correct set back, barrel , and angle. Then, bore the bottom, and the v-drive will locate on the floor, not even a half an inch off the floor. Then set the sponsons to the strut. If you are running an all Iron engine, shove it way foward, put a Three blade cleaver on it, and she will kick the tail. Both hydros and flats really do not work well with 600 hp, but That is a starting point that is safe. You will want more, right away, after the first jet boat drills you. This same thing happened to me. You can call me anytime at the shop, after 5pm, tues - sat @707 864 0332. I would be glad to help you.

Hey Ryan....I would consult with Dave Rankin. He just bought a new Hydro for Tony to campaign in the IHBA/NJBA. Dave is the man on hydro set up. He has perfected the single pin turn with the ass in the air. It's quite a sight.

Listen to Joe Shelfo....I hope this answers your PM. I am not the man to talk to..that was an inside joke....

i think what joe is sayin is that when you move your strut back and shallow the angle so your shaft lines up with the v drive is the rear of the srtut will then get shallower, so the youll want to make it a tad deeper. example: your sponsons are 6 1/2 deep, make the center of the rear of the barrel 6 3/8 . this is one of those thinz ya say there is 10 ways to skin that kat. i think thats the sayin. hope that helps R.B.
