I have a 454 big block. the last time i drove the boat it was miss firing do to the distributor cap coming loose. i have replace the cap, battery, and also the altinator. I cant even get the gauges to come as well. when i was disconnecting the battery i could hear my speakers making noises. when i try to start the boat i get NOTHING!!!!. I have followed most of the wiring connect to the key ignition and dont see any issues. Any info would help a ton as i am trying to save money and also trying to take the boat to the river for the fourth of july. Thanks

Check for a fuse under the dash, or check the 50 amp breaker at the engine harness if you have one.

Start with fundamentals , put a plug wire close to ground and Crank the motor (should be a good strong spark , then work the accelerator pump on the carb , fuel should be present if you got spark and gas and a strong battery the boat should fire , once more I'm around (between "shops") today if you need help Tom

When you say you "try to start and get nothing" do you mean the starter does not crank over? or does it crank but not fire? If all you did was replace a distributer cap be sure to check the rotor is in proper position, and did not get damaged when the cap came loose. If you dont have spark my guess is thats where your issue is gonna be if the boat ran before hand. What kind if distributer??? Hei or points...

I ran an Hei distributer in my 59 chevy and a few times when i would connect and disconect the battery i would get a power surge and actually fry the ignition module within the distributer. Check there for sure! They are cheap and a good place to start if not getting spark with an HEI.

Posts 5, and 9 are were I would be starting. Also use a voltmeter and check for voltage at the coil, dist/points, ignition ect. If you don't have a multimeter go to autozone and get one. Chase the voltage and you will find the problem.

Get a test light and check the junction block where the main power wire that brings power to the junction block either from the battery or a wire from the starter. It should be hot(power) all the time. then check the igniton wire when you turn on the key it should be hot. Also ck the circuit to the solinoid that when your cranking its hot.

With your gauges not moving when you turn the key sounds like you had something go wrong when you swapped the battery.

if you turn the key and you get nothing, no click, no crank, no nothing i recommend hitting the starter and solenoid with a hammer. the solenoid may be stuck in the open position, do this while someone is turning the key. this is how i get big trucks started they have hung up starters. 8 times out of 10 it works. you can also get a screw driver and bump the starter by grounding it to itsself use the screw driver to touch the posts on the starter at the same time. if the starter bumps or the motor starts you know you have a prob between the starter and the ignition. that will help narrow it down to and electrical problem

it may be shade tree but it works. IMO its the best way to diagnose a bad starter with out paying a mech a 4 hr minimum elec diagnostic cause in a matter of 15 min the mech will do what my shade tree advise was, to isolate the starter from the elec sys. then you risk him giving you back your shizz and saying i got it started and after i got it started i shut it on and off a few times to make sure its good. all the while hes handing you a bill for 4 hrs at 120 if its a merc shop and you have to pay it and hope the prob doesent come back. but if you figure the prob on your own and you now know the starter is starting to hang up then you can go to your mech and get the starter replaced for half the labor and parts. not to sure about anybody else but im all about saving money where i can:D:D:D:D

Well, The way I read his statement is he has no power when he hits the key. So that tells me he has "NO" power to the starter.

As far as your beating the starter with a hammer, Yeah, I've done it a few times. Sure it will get ya going, but it's not fixing the problem. I am a mechanic by trade, so my way of isolating a starter problem would be different than just busting out my ballpean and smaking the thing a few times. Sure it might work for a few starts, but I would rather "know" what the problem is rather than being called out on my off time to R/R a starter becuase I knew there was a problem with it in the first place. I would hook up my remote start button and break out my ohm meter and check right at the starter without screwing up my screwdriver and risk melting off the start teminal and creating more problems. Check the simple things fist, fuse breaker wire conections and go from their.
My labor rate is only 90 bucks an hour, so bring it to me and I can save you a few bucks and get it fixed right the first time....:)hand

we are on the same page. i was not suggesting that he hit the starter just to get him going. i was just trying to get him to look into it because if my starter was hanging up i would do the back woods bump then get on the phone and get me a new starter. however if it was a wireing issue then this is a whole other complication. me and wireing dont get along:)sphss i just dont like wireing so i tend to go that route first. if i got my shizz started with the back woods bump then i would know right away that i was going to have to get into the wireing. (oh joy) by the way its good to hear that there is a shop out there with a reasonable rate:)devil

I think we all need "too sober" to be a little more precise on his problem. Does the motor turn over at all? Also he mentioned that he cant even get his gauges to come on. This tells me the ignition might be bad too. I dunno i could be wrong. :)hand

The motor doesn't turn over at all. When I turn the key I get absolutly nothing. Thanks for the info so far, I am going to work on it tonight and keep you all posted. Thanks again
