I've worked on several of these projects at the company where I used to work at. Machined and built the shortblocks for the Model A/Subaru as well as the Porsche/Chevy... along with a couple "standard" Chevy OHC. Pete has some good ideas... and the dough and resources to do/make all the weird combinations and projects that he comes up with. My only complaint was everything he worked on was very "rough" as far as the finish... never built anything to be a nice finished piece... just wanted to make it work. That drove me crazy... even if it may not work... I want it to be as nice a piece as reasonably possible.

Oddity has its own kind of cool.

It would be cool to put a SOHC head on a 540" Ford or Chevy.

The problem is the canted valve design of the Big Ford and Chevys. We discussed a few ideas a couple of times as far as different rocker designs to make it work but never got beyond the idea stage since he found the porsche head. The problem with the Porsche head is the limited port flow. Even with the 4 valves the port size is about that of an oval port Big Chevy. Even with being a 427 the engine was very biased towards low end grunt. Of course extensive port work and cams would help... but I don't think the head would support a very large cubic inch engine at a higher rpm... plus the bucket size limits how much and agressive of a cam.

There are always solutions to make anything work... it's just a matter of time, resources, and patience.

This looks like a great idea and I love to see innovation.

Cutting all that valve train weight out would be a huge move in the right direction.
When they get this to fit a BBC I'll definitely take a good look at it.
More than anything I like to have something different than anyone else has.

That would be bizzare to block the oil passages and run the motor without a cam or lifters in the block. :)devil

Very interesting ! Thank you for explaining more of the issues faced with trying to do this within 'packaging restraints.'

Every action has a re-action. Trying to get 'all the stars to align' can be very difficult if not impossible with so many restraints.

Dealing with an engine family that can range from 396cids to 600+cids really makes things difficult for things like this.

As I said "dare to be different" and getting a head built for a 5 liter to support HP for an 8+ liter could be problematic.

Hey... I know a guy who just got a CNC mill to do aluminum Y-block Ford heads... perhaps he'd be interested. hehehe.

Actually Pete built an OHC Big Block Chevy with Arias heads... it was a hemi-chevy. Needed a bit of refinement... but it did work. But the trick setup would be the wedge head for asperated engines... but a blown dohc hemi chevy or ford would certainly get the award for "most unique" on the sandbar.:D


All of the v8 engines still use the cam in the stock location to drive the distributor and oil pump... plus it is used to drive the cams on the heads. There were a few built with the cams on the heads being driven by a small htd pulley pressed onto the balancer... but this had a problem of not getting enough belt wrap and had a couple "skip" teeth and get all out of time.

One thing I found while working on the subaru/model a project... the subaru head fits small block ford very closely... just need to machine more of the subaru heads before welding them together and it would fit quite nicely... but Pete wasn't interested because it wasn't "weird" enough... and of course a ohc small block ford had been done years ago by cosworth/lotus/ford.

Well... the "A" was 200 inches... and seemed to make some good suds considering we didn't have much to work with on the bottom end. It had a custom billet crower 5 main crank and a billet crankcase... but all of it was still tied to an iron model a block so you could only get so much compression and horsepower before things wanted to twist up and seperate. But yes... I believe Steve Stanley at Flow Rite has a few good cnc programs for the subaru heads... the hot ticket was the turbo head... better port design... the only draw back was that the exhaust side has a funky dog leg on a couple of ports, but with a little custom weld and machine work that problem could be addressed.
