Why is the US Flag displayed Upside Down?

The upside down U.S. flag is an official signal of distress. It is not meant to be, and is not officially recognized as any type of disrespect when so displayed for the right reasons. To the contrary, here is the relevant part of the US Code of Laws regarding how to fly the flag when in distress: THE FLAG CODE
Title 36, U.S.C., Chapter 10
As amended by P.L. 344, 94th Congress
Approved July 7, 1976

§ 176. Respect for flag: No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

Most individuals who have served in the military service of our nation will (or should) recognize this signal. As a result of the many traitors and enemies we as a free people have, both foreign and domestic, as a result of the many unconstitutional acts, legislation and atrocities passed and/or committed against US citizens and their life, liberty and property, and as a result of policies that have allowed (and continue to allow) enemies of this nation to enter in large numbers through a porous border policy, I believe the life, liberty and property of US Citizens are in dire danger and distress.

Of course if you do fly your flag upside down, the police, military, or any other good citizen might come and kick your door down and try to save you from whatever life threatening event is going on.

Nowhere in the code does it allow for the distress sign to be used as a political statement. So unless you are in a life threatening situation and are pleading for someone to come to your immeadiate aid (as in don't knock, just come in and help please), I wouldn't advise it. Disrespecting our National Flag in order to make a political statement is still wrong. Just because the other side doesn't care about our country, doesn't mean we don't still care. If you fly it, fly it with pride. If you don't have the pride, don't fly it at all. But if you fly it and say you are in dire distress, don't be surprised if the response you get isn't what you were expecting.

This is NOT a political statement, politics ended last night! :)hammers
And this act clearly defines this action as not being disrespectful...."for the right reasons"
And for the record, I do consider this nation in a life threatening situation!
(BTW: if you knock down my door, you WILL BE SHOT)

I suggest you read this last paragraph again...

I suggest you reread what I posted. I didn't say I was going to knock. And if I come in, it is highly probable that someone will get shot, especially if you have a weapon close at hand or in hand. I am good at what I do, and I've been in places where other people didn't like us kicking thier doors. Your life isn't in jeapordy, nor are you imminant danger. So flying the flag upside down is just being disrespectful and acting like a spoilled kid that didn't get his way. Get over it! We have apparently lost the election this year so we'll have to tighten our belts, grow some more backbone and stand up for what we believe where and when we can.

I fought for that flag along with a lot of my friends and we have lost some very good friends who were also fighting for that flag. You may choose to disrespect that flag and if you do, you are choosing to disrespect my friends that died for it. IF you think I will care about your hurt feelings when you have disrespect those good men, you are really over estimating your self worth. Fly it upside down, indicating there is a life threatening situation and you need help if you so choose. If I see it and feel it is disrespectful, I might just give the approriate response to someone in distress. I won't knock and I will not give a rip what you have for weapons, because we were trained to go big or stay home.

You can choose your course of action. You can't choose mine, nor can you predict just how far someone will go to fix your disrespect for that flag and all it stands for. Is it really worth the risk just to be able to pout over one election? So becareful what you ask for, you might just get it.

Instead of whining about it, why don't we start working on what positive things can be done to turn this train wreck around or to at least minimize the damage when it happens.

I have to wonder when I see the dems flying thier little American flags in victory...what that flag means to them.
I may not have fought for this flag, but I did volunteer to defend it. I served my country and proudly. The sadness in my heart is, and maybe that's what this election is for me, is the realization that what I chose to defend, and the country which that flag stands for, no longer exists. It hasn't for a while but after yesterday, maybe it's just no longer possible to ignore.
The Whitehouse has no business flying the American flag. Anyone who voted for Obama and in support of what this country has become, has no business flying the American flag. They stand in direct opposition to what America was intended to be and what it stood for.

Maybe I won't fly my flag upside down, because I agree...I will not use it to voice a protest. That would be disrespecting the flag.:))THumbsUp

Now I suggest you re-read what I posted...
I did not say you would knock, I said "if you knock down my door"....and I agree, someone will be shot because I will have a weapon in hand or close at hand...I always do. (for the record, I am very good at what I do as well and I too "can go big") Apparently as you are full of yourself, my interpretation of this "act" is different than yours as I consider the Obama administration places my family in "dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property"....over time, this may make sense to you.

I would never disrespect our father's flag, I fly it daily with great pride. I am simply exercising my rights to fly the flag as I deem appropriate which IMHO is supported by this act. In my heart, I believe Betsy Ross would agree....We should use the flag respectfully to support and secure our independence...
is not officially recognized as any type of disrespect when so displayed for the right reasons.
... I didn't say I was going to knock. And if I come in, it is highly probable that someone will get shot, especially if you have a weapon close at hand or in hand. ...
So, let us be clear so there is no misunderstanding, if you are cruising in a residential neighborhood in the suburbs of Birmingham, AL. and you see a home displaying an upside down U.S. flag on their established flag pole, if you choose to knock down that door, please understand, in the event that is my door, I will respond as deemed necessary....

How about we come up with a new flag to fly in protest. Maybe we establish a new protocol with the old flag. I was thinking about folding the corner of the stars and stripes over on mine and flying it that way.

YES!!! This pushes us "over the cliff". I agree with you SC, we did not get here over night, but this election, IMHO has placed us in a position in "dire distress" ....we need help NOW! We must do all we can to bring attention to the fact "we need to save our country"

BTW, I like your suggestion of a new flag.... but shouldn't the Obama administration design a new flag to support their Socialist platform? How about using the flag flown over the Benghazi embassy on 9/11/12 as a template?

Hey snoc, maybe Ambassador Chris Stevens should have flown his U.S. flag upside down....would that have helped and as you are "trained to go big", would you have knocked down his door too?

I'm kinda partial to the flag that has represented our nation for all these years. I'd rather see it at half staff till America is united again. Till then I'll keep the ol girl in my prayers till she is strong again, and the flag can once again fly proudly over America.

Had I been there, there would have been either fewer dead on our side and the attack repelled or 5 dead. It's that simple really. And you really don't want to find me in Alabama. I have taken flags inappropriately flown down before and will again if the need arises. I'm not a tough guy, just a guy that knows how far I'll go and for what. And obviously one that has more invested in that flag that you are so keen to use for a personal agenda than you realize. But, I'm not alone in my convictions so do what you think you must, someone WILL call you on it eventually.

And I like our flag just fine the way it is. Perhaps you need a flag that says: Our country voted against me and I all I have to show for it is this stupid flag, Help! Or you can man up and start doing things to help get the country back on track. You might be the flag type, so do what works best for you. When our country is in trouble there is too much work to do to worry about you.
