What is the acceptable amount of wear on the bowl bearing end of the shaft before it needs to be repaired or replaced? Thank you.

I would answer but I don't know. I was going through mine while the motor was being rebuilt and just replaced everything. I figured as long as I was doing it I may as well know what I had. This is what my old shaft at the bowl end looked like.



And I was told that it would be ok, but I replaced it anyway. It's just another part I might put on Ebay. :D

What??? Your question needs to be clarified:)bulb:)bulb

Are you referring to the tail end of the shaft where the bowl bushings ride?? Rule of thumb is, if you can feel grooves then its time to replace it. If there is more then .002 of run out on the tail end of the shaft, it will need to be straightened or replaced.

The front bushing area is worn 0.002" and the rear bushing area is worn 0.004". I'm talking about the wear not the straightness of the shaft. Put it on a lathe earlier this year, spun true as can be. Thanks.

What I was told by one of the pros - if you drag your finger nail down the bearing surface of the shaft, you shouldn't be able to feel a difference between where the bearing rides and where it doesn't. How picky you are depends on what you are trying to get out of the pump.

At the wear you report, considering your intended use (and budget) you should be fine with that shaft.

Another thing to consider is whether there is a groove where the seal rides. If there is a groove, the seal won't work too well. Again, your intended use and budget will dictate how picky you should be.

Wear on the bowl bushings - if the coating is worn off and you can see the base material the bushing should be replaced.

It won't sell. I've tried several times to sell an extra shaft of mine on Ebay, but never even got a question about it. And just this week I watched another shaft go unsold on there, never even got too many looks. But, who knows you might get lucky and sell it right off. Thanks again.

That wont work! The tail end of the shaft is "Hard chromed"...........

Buy a new shaft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the hard stainless TIG weld not comparable with the hard chrome? We fix lots of worn out bearing shafts that way at work. But they're not spinning at 4000 RPM either, so I guess maybe not good enough.

If I were in your position I would use it as is. You will leak oil out and water in, but that is not a really big deal, just keep adding lube (and stay away from the EPA;) )

If you want a repair, Duane (HTP) carries a repair sleeve that can be installed. I think it is made by Agressor. The next best option is to buy a new shaft.

Talk to one of the pros before you try to weld, but I don't think it is worth the effort. Lots to consider, like heat treatment, warping and straightening the shaft etc.

I agree. If you don't feel it'll hold up, buy a new one. If it wasn't leaking before you may be ok, but to weld and mess with something like that spinning at 4800+ rpm and an impeller attached to it to explode just isn't worth it. I could feel the grove in mine and asked around and yes it can be repaired but a new one is always better. BUY THE COMPLETE rebuild kit as well. It'll save you money in the long run and all parts are new.
