My interior is the coctail seat version consisting of two front seats and two side seats in back.
My front seats are seperated from the coctail seats. and not made together like most that I see, so the rar seat can be removed.

My questions are two fold.
1) Originally the rear seat had a bolt on the upper side that went thru a hole and bolted to the gunnel side and the bottoms were just screwed down to the stringers. I have filled this hole and really do not want to drill a hole there. I have made some backets, that bolt to the stringers, to bolt the bottom down to but it does not hold the interior tight enough to the side.
How do You guys anchor the sides and keep it tight fitting without this side bolt?

2) How far back do You Guys usually set the front seat back?

With the cocktail rear seat in place it aligns perfectly with a hump or notch on the top side of the gunnel and when the front seat is butted up properly the front seat feels too close (as in knees in the chest) for Me.
I would like to move the seat back some but any amount will mean shortening up the front of the rear seat and cuting and reatatching the vinyl on the seat. I was just curious if there was a standard that You use to detemine how far back to go?

Post up some Pictures of Your interior mounting?

I don't have a pic of that area, but I think my seats are just as close to the dash, my gas pedal is under the dash though so I just stick my legs pretty much straight when I'm driving, and the wheel is a comfortable distance for my arms.

Hal, Are the backs of the back seats completely covered with upholstry? Maybe you could find some sort of "Z" bar (aluminum) that you could attache to the back of the seats that would slip up under the gunnels to hole them tight, ot make your own type of bracket. Something like this

You have to be careful when mounting the seats to the gunwale, if there is any flex in the side of the hull do to the lack of any bulkheads, the seats will take some punishment and possibly tear up the seat backs.

Make sure there is a bulkhead at or near the seats and fasten to that.

As far as how close things are, I would do whatever is the most comfortable, there really is no set distance. Race type stuff will put the seat as far back as possible to try and eliminate leg interferance in case of an ejection or roll...

Nice looking boat BTW.

GT, How goes it there? I think Hal added in some gunnel bracing when he did the restore job.

Not too bad actually...you?

If there is some gunwale bracing, mount to that (much less vertical movement), hows that for unjacking a thread? :D

Not too bad here either. Sacramento is having some nice weather considereing summer is here Oly 76* right now but is suppose to start warming up now into the 90's It's time to get the boat out and ready for a few outtings this summer.

You did a very nice job of un-highjacking the thread.

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread conversation... :D :D :D

Normally, When I am building the boat interior (sitting on the plywood framed making vroom vroom noises) I will check the position of the gas pedal and the steering wheel and mark the seat placement so the back seat will be built accordingly. I would suggest that you move the pedal farther toward the bow so you can streach out a little. The odds of you being ejected at 100mph are very little so keeping the pedal out where you will not tangle up in the dash is not really a worry.

How does every One with Cocktail seat interior mount their rear seats?
Do You use a bottom mount only, or do You also anchor to the side as well?. I want them to fit tight to the sides,but I really do not want to drill holes in the sides to run that side bolt thru.
My front seats are seperate from the rear...Hal

Run the mounting stud below the gunnel, use an L shaped backing cleat. The cleat can be made of wood or aluminum, and will sandwich the gunnel. The key is to have a perfect base that is well connected to the floor, you don't want the sides doing any holding, except to keep them against the seat.

Hal,

I don't know how well it would work but, they do make some really heavy duty Velcro with self sticking backing. I know we use to use it on computer hardware so it would stay in place when the equipment was moved around on roll away type tables. It would stick a flat panel monitor to the back wall of the table. It's just a thought.

I have been keeping up with your build and you definitely have something to be proud of .I have a kona like yours with similar seating, mine are mounted to the stringers and at the bracing that is perpendicular to the stringers.

Yea I took those wood wedge shaped pieces out becouse I thought I might want to run a two seater sometime and did not like the way they looked.
I made some seat brackets from aluminum angle,which work very well but do not hold them as tight to the sides as I would like.
Maybe I should try to shim them to pitch down a bit, so that when the seats are bolted down it will draw them in tight against the side?
This same Interior originally had allthread bolts comming out of the side of the seat and bolted thru the gunnels. I filled all those holes and do not want to drill any.
I do like Sleekcrafter's idea of the cleat that sandwiches the side of the gunnel, but I am not sure it will work due to the fuel tank being right there.

That interior looks awesome. I would do whatever I could to not have to change anything with the upholstery.

Well this is where the interior needs to be ,inorder to make the hump on the interior and the hump on the boat to line up and look right. However in this location my left leg and knee are cramed up against the the side of the boat and My right leg and gofast foot are bent and not really streached out nice and comfy and My arms are bent and the wheel feels really close.



I moved the interior back to a leg comfortable position where My legs are fairly straight but still slightly bent and My arms are streached out but slightly bent.
The only problem with this location is with astetics. Now in this position the hump on the rear seat does not line up with the hump on the boat. The two are offset.


This is where the seats need to be.






In these two pics You can see how the humps do not line up:mad:
I am not real happy with how this looks.

I am just wondering if it looks bad enough to warant shortening the rear seats to to make things line up?
Also i will have to see how the engine place ment comes into play. I set the pump back ,so there fore the engine sould be able to be moved back, So there shoud be room to move the interioback?.....Hal

I agree with Greg. It's hard to tell from a single dimension photo, but it looks
like you could just take loose the vinyl and trim a couple inches off the bottom
section of the rear seat, then restaple? It's a shame that the cutout is so far
forward though. Removing that much material would probably weaken it some.

When I had the pump in my Kachina set back, I kept the motor where it was
and had a local drive shaft shop make up a longer one.

Yea I could do that part My self ,but the cusion would also have to be trimed down. Also I am not sure ,but the shotening may have to be carried up the side also,to make the bucket seat fit tight against the side if the boat the way it is supposed to?
If the engine is to be left in the original location ,then the interior will deffinately have to be shortened,becouse the piece of the interior that goes accross to close every thing of from the engine is allready prety close to the front of the engine....Hal

I was afraid of that and why I mentioned the single dimension thing. I'm no upholsterer so that one would have to go to a shop if it were me doing it.

Ah yes. The old boat work/re-work domino affect. Everything you want to do seems to affect everything else you've already done (rarely in a good way).

Seems an easy decision on the motor placement at least.

I didn't want to have to redo my rails which is why I chose to leave mine where it was. It was only a couple inches, but that equates to quite a bit of angle at the drive shaft after all is said and done. Fortunately for you the rails are virginal (never been drilled) and you can put everything where you want.
