So I finally pulled the cover and checked the clearances. It is anywhere from .003 - .008 depending on where you check it on each blade. What should the clearance be and is this far enough out to make a significant difference? I would really rather just run it for the summer and maybe pull it apart and clean it up this winter.

It's a little hard to check with the rust that has already formed since I went to the lake on Saturday. Obviously it's no stainless wear ring. I know it ain't beautiful but for a lake boat it looks OK to me. I'm just a car guy though so I know nothing about pumps. And before you say it, I do not have the $$$ to change to a Berk or for an energizer kit right now.

dam

that thing looks like it has been through world wars! that is tight enough. mine was out a 1/4 inch once. it still worked it was just sloppy as hell. it took a while to get on a plane and even longer to reach any speed! it was just like a slipping tranny except it would catch up with it self. yj are flow pump. american turbine and berks are pressure pumps. i doubt i could get away with that now.
after i shimmed my yj back to where it needed to be, it hit hard again!!

if you ever need to tighten up your tolerances, you shim the thrust bearing. 4 bolts on the front of your pump.

your impeller has seen some rocks!

i dont know what others will say but here it goes
i filed out the leading edges of my impeller. it gave me a noticeable difference!!

yj has an adjustable nozzle. when i adjusted mine almost all the way up it made mine faster! the drawback to adjusting it up is it dosent handle rough water very well! it is easy to adjust!

i know there is more but im done for now

here is my old YJ impeller. it is a "B" cut. just FYI jacuzzi B rates with a berk A.
a jacuzzi A rates with a berk AA. the shims are two different thicknesses.
How do you know which cut it is?

Dial indicator ;) The "Blade" does look a little grim your probably leaving some performance on the table call if you need help Tom
What are the potential hazards of continuing through this season with it? It's damn hot here right now. I really don't want to tear the pump apart in this heat. on top of that we are taking a vacation this month. We are both self employed so vacation means no income.

Energizer kit may make a good winter project.
