This is going to be a pretty big project planning on restoring this one it is going to need some glass work but it shouldn't be to bad.

Short story

The guy that owned it started stripping it down to restore it but ended up in jail... His Mother and Brother were selling it for what was owed at the storage yard $250 bucks... he has the interior, fuel tanks, gauges, steering, berkeley pump, all in storage and he is going to give it to me this week.

he had been telling me it was a 21' so when I picked it up today and found out it was a 18' I was happy I wanted a small light boat for running the river here in Florida.

Well here are the pics and if anyone has any advice please help...

And it deff looks rough...

Where can I buy a new coupler like this???

Holy gauge holes batman!

Looks like a big project. have fun.

As for the trailer coupler... I have the same one on my old competetive trailer. First thing I said when I saw it was that is was coming off for a traditional coupler. I have used it more than a few times now and truth be told... its great! Other than looking and maybe being out dated it functions great and is easy to hook up.

Hey 2Sav,That is exactly like the hull that I gave to Jim. I do'nt know if You have seen it or not.

HaulinTail, I gave away a hull exactly like that a few months ago. From what I could gather it is a Schuster Tahiti, whitch is one of the first Tahitis made.
It is very hard to find any info on these hulls. I have only seen two others ,one of which was a picture of one that Old Rigger turned Me onto that was for sale in the autotrader and if I am not mistaken was in Florida and looked like the Paint scheme on You'rs.I wonder if that is the same boat?
The other one is owned By a guy who goes by Teamred who is a friend of Teamgreen, over on Banderlog.Even though i ask for pics of Teamreds boat ,I never did get any.
Mine was said to be a '75 but I belive it was an earlier model maybe a '70- '73.
OldRigger, here and on HotBoat ,is the undisputed authority on Tahiti boats,as He and I think his Father ,use to work for Tahiti Boats.
I will try to find the pick of the one that I think looked like Your's and I will post some of Mine.....Hal

For my understanding from the lady at the storage yard said, the gentleman that is in jail had bought the boat about 3 years ago for $1,200 and was going to restore it and then he got locked up and the mother was paying the storage but was a year behind, and when I asked about the boat she told me I could have it for $250 because she wanted it off her lot. and that she would call the owner and get the title and the rest of the parts, I also spoke with the mother and I am getting the parts and title tommorow. they were unsure of the length and year but she gave me the original storage sheet and it says right on it 1973 18' tahiti....

The weird thing is there are no hull numbers anywhere on this thing that I can see.

and I was going to ask oldrigger if he knew anything about this one because he said he was familiar with any tahitti pre 75.

it would be cool to get some history, and looks like I am going to hae to fix this one right...

and I like the trailer coupler at first I was like WTF but then I hooked it to the truck and it is kind of nice and deff looks retro like the boat and chrome fenders...

and the hull is pretty decent just the top of the deck where they sanded down to matt and then let it sit. the floor is really solid but next to the motor looks like someone tried to fix it half ass so I am going to cut that out and see whats under it.

and yes there are way to many gauge holes I don't even think you can buy enough gauges to fill them.

I have another question but I am sure it is going to be hard to awnser. with the full floor is this a full stringer boat or is it 1/2 or 1/4.

No numbers in the hull until '74. Only numbers would be on the id tag mounted on the insde of the gunnale if it's still there.

Looks like someone had a BBQ on the deck at one time. Only seen a hand full of that hull with the Tahiti plates on it. Schuster built boats for several guys, including Weiman, he would use anyones molds to sell a boat and put his name on it.

99.9% were all short stringers back then. You're a better judge of it than anyone on the board. Get in the boat and see how far the stringers run past the little bulkhead in the bildge. If it's got full length you should be able to see some nail heads or screw heads below the glass holding the floor in place, following the stringers towards the front of the boat. More than likely it's stubbies unless someone changed them along the way.

there is no tags anywhere was looking. How are the stringers setup on these hulls?
That's a 1/4 stringer boat. Tahiti was a low budget builder for the lake and family orientated. You can get some ok speed out of her but I wouldn't expect too much. Learn from the build and enjoy it.

Yea the boat was in a storage lot it was next to a jon boat that the trailer was missing the tire and the rim was sunk into the pavement like it has been there for a while.

it would be cool to see a picture of the boat when it was together.

and what do you guys use for rubrail on a boat like this. I would like to find something aluminum or stainless, but it looks like it would be a pain to bend it around the bow and transom...

Stringers

Mine had a nice red with metalflake gellcoated bilge, with 1/4 stringers in the bilge, and under the floor were smaller 1x wood frames and stringers with a light coat of chopped glass over it.

I also have that same coupler on My Daytona trailer. I pilled it from San Diego,Cali to Las Vegas ,Nv and it worked fine .It is very easy to un hook!...H
