Anyone know who makes an adapter? I've seen them for the older motors where they sit between the riser and the manifold, but there doesn't seem to be anything available for the later motors. Is there a reason for this?

You would have to modify your elbows on either header/manifold. The O2 bung has to be welded THROUGH the water to get the sensor into the dry exhaust. I bought my Lightning headers used from a guy that had ordered him for his 496HO with an O2 sensor bung. It's about a $125-160 option on most aftermarket exhaust. As long as you had a competent welding person, you could weld one into any exhaust. Just make sure the water jackets are all sealed up inside and outside of the sensor.

How come you can't just install an adapter between the manifold and riser? The water injected doesn't get into the exhaust stream until after the right hand bend, right (in the picture)?

That is pretty close the ports, but would be much easier than into a tube. Dana has a "sandwich" block that goes in their setup(s) that has an O2 port, similar to what you are showing/referring to.



O2 Sensor Spacer Plate Set

496 riser O2 bung install

Just go to a muffler shop or Napa, buy a 18mm O2 stainless bung and have a shop (stainless welder) cut a hole thru your 496 riser above the flange thru both walls, weld in the bung and after you test with air for leaks if all is ok, you, are ready to go. Don't leave a wide band O2 sensor in the riser all the time, just when you are measuring, setting or adjusting air/fuel ratios as it won't last with water vapor, especially salt vapor!
Plug the bung when not in use with a 18mm plug , which they also sell.

Thanks Raylar, but I'd like to find a more "bolt-on" mod that I can direct customers to. All the labor is the hard part that I couldn't expect a customer to do or have done.

I think the Raylar version is just as easy as anything else. Plug it when not in use. You only need to do one anyway, so it takes - what - 3 or 4 minutes to pull one of the risers off? The parts are readily available, so that's not an issue. The hardest part would be finding a stainless welder; and may not be hard at all, depending on the area you are in. Once found, I am sure he/she would be up for repetative work.:D

I'm looking for something that I can direct customers to nationwide. Local is not the problem.

I found one guy, but he stated it was only up to 2002 engines. Apparently Merc changed the design in 03?

Dana Marine is going to modify a stock one for me and let my customers buy it on an exchange basis. Thanks for the point in the right direction Ray!
