Well I broke the cruiser. Towing the tube at 45 started hearing a loud ticking. Smelled hot oil so I shut it down. Engine oil was fine with no metal in it. Oil pressure stayed over 40 but I was loosing power as I limped t to shore. Got a ride back around the lake to get the trailer and it wouldn't spin enough to fire when I tried to load it.

The plan is to disconnect the H-bar and see if its the engine, pump, or both. Anything special to look for?

You're already going in the right direction. Spin with wrench first before trying to start it. Then I would pull all the plugs for a look, disconnect ignition & crank a little bit at a time & listen. I would also pull valve covers before spinning and watch as I spin by hand first. Did you see your water temp gauge? To me smelling hot oil sounds like over heating, but maybe not.

I'm torn between wanting the engine to be toast and wanting it to just be the pump so I can finish the summer. I have a couple other pumps but the only other engine I have that is complete, belongs to the K boat. Mamma put a hold on spending money to finish the K boat, but she wants this one running again so I'll have to see what she allows once I diagnose the problem.

Just got it home from the weekend so I'll jump on it first thing in the AM.

Did you lose a cam, lifter, rocker arm, or bend a pushrod?
Haven't pulled it apart yet. If its the engine I think it will be a spun rod or main. It never lost oil pressure, nor did it miss, just a loud tapping and then it tightened up after shutting it down the second time. Ran 5 min at below 3000 to get it to the shore. Still tapped but not as hard. Used a bass boat to get it towed to the dock and on the trailer.

It could be the pump bearing. It got sandbarred last weekend by a 10yr old. Flushed and lubed it, didn't see any damage. I killed it as soon as he started scrapping bottom. Took 45 min to get it off the sandbar. Tomorrow will hopefully tell.

I'll bet you lost a main bearing. A spun main will lock up the motor but a rod bearing not so much, and I don't know about a pump bearing going all of a sudden and locking the motor.

I know you didnt say never but never say never I have locked an olds up with 1 rod bearing and it never even spun! Just galded real bad started knocking and when i let off the throttle thats all she wrote wouldnt turn over again until i took it apart!

A rod bearing can lock up a motor if it has no oil flow. The galling proves the lack of oil. But Ice Creaman is right. A rod does not mean a lockedup engine. I have spun a rod bearing and never knew it until the engine was torn down to use the block for something else. Bearing and crank were fine except the bearing was turned about 45*. Fords used floating bearings that were designed to spin for decades. When the SBC first came out, some of the hot rod brainiacs changed the bearings out for full floating bearings.

Spin a main, and the oil to the main journal AND one rod journal are shut off, and it going to lock up, guaranteed!

I took the drive shaft loose and the pumps turns freely. The motor turned over without any binding on a ratchet when I pulled the plugs so l put the plugs back in. I pulled the valve covers and checked the top the end. Since the top end looked good, I started the motor. Motors definitely knocking, I suspect a rod bearing. Next step, pull the motor.

I did stop and measure, but I don't have enough room to squeeze the blower motor in. At least not with the blower on it. Only quick options are throw the 440 (Mopar) back together or take the blower off and run the K motor (not sure what cam Pat had in it, so that might be a snag).
