Can I still use the - terminal on my coil to run the tack. Using the super mag III with external coil.

Call Autometer's tech line. I think their part # 9117 tach interface is what you need. I'm using one with an internal coil vertex, but the instructions also show how to use it with an external coil mag. I had trouble with the tach freaking out at high RPM due to solid core plug wires. I swapped to suppression wires and it seems to have fixed it. Won't know for sure until we can deck the throttle and see what it does at high RPM. Hope this helps and good luck.

Make sure you wire it exactly like they show in the directions, With the trigger wire & the ground trigger wire on each side of the mag kill switch.:))THumbsUp

I started to buy the 9118 based on what the Summit on-line catalog said. I ended up calling Autometer before I ordered. They told me the catalog wasn't completely correct and to use the 9117. Call Autometer's tech and make sure, but the 9117 looks like it will work for both internal and external mags...
We still haven't had a chance to run the boat all out and prove the tach works throughout the RPM range. We are scheduled to test soon, certainly before Bakersfield. Also we're trying to make CFW next week, but my work schedule is kinda insane right now so not sure we'll be able to work that out. Good luck.

I wired it like the diagram but in the install notes it said may not work with solid core wires. Didnt say anything about that when I ordered it. The new converter is still cheaper than new wires sleves exc. so I guess I will have to try that.

Not sure if you got this worked out, but we had to change our wires. We originally had the solid core wires from Hunt. The tach worked OK at low RPM, but freaked out after about 3500-4000 RPM and then pegged 9000 RPM shorthly after. We switched to suppression wires and it seems to have fixed our issue up to about 5k RPM. Will have to wait until the boat is in the water to check any higher.
Hope you get it figured out.

I just ordered the box you have 9117 is it going to work or do I still need to change the wires?

Ours didn't work properly with solid core wires. We had to change them.. I'd try it with what you have and see what happens. Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Just a follow up 71hallet. We tested our boat today and the suppresion wires solved the last of our tach issues. Works fine from 0-8000 RPM.. Hope you get yours worked out.

Thanks David!!! So you ended up with regular wires and the 9117 box? Was kinda waiting for your reply.

Suppression wires on a mag? is it a vertex?

Seems to be two camps on that issue. Don Zig and a bunch of old timers (GN7):D are steering me away, but some have claimed the radio suppression wires work just dandy... More details please!

Yes, that's what worked for us.. Believe me, I've been waiting way overdue to get the boat in the water again...

Yes, we are using a Vertex/Hunt mag with Moroso Blue Max suppresion wires. When I first put the mag in the boat, we had the Hunt solid core 8mm wires. Ran fine, but my tach didn't work right. Autometer says their tachs and tach interface box will not work with solid core wires so I figured I'd try the suppression wires. The suppression wires solved the tach issue and there doesnt' seem to be any performance difference...

The boat looks killer 71hallett , I've always liked the simplicity factor with a mag, do they idle o.k.? ect. Any drawbacks of a mag?, for a 500 hp average joe kinda guy like me? Anyone? I know they are pricey, but so is a msd set up? :):)punch
