That's a bad batch of springs or one hell of a harmonics issue.

How much time on them?

Same thing I was thinking, "harmonics" You got 3 days to get that thing ready Darin:happy:

What caused the mark on the spring right at the edge of the break. Same mark on the 3rd coil down.

Not uncommon on valve springs.

PAC makes a KILLER valve spring when you wear those out.

we had a few failures like that on the a-fuel car...always on the intake valve...we installed new springs before Pomona...6 runs later I find Valve spring parts..we were lucky. no major damage...

Ah, seen springs break many times, no biggie. But you can take a look at spring to retainer clearance, make sure the retainer slips into the spring nicely, none of the "snaps" into the spring deal. And on nexteks make darn sure the springs are set to the EXACT distance from coil bind that manley states. Forget setting them by pressure, if you are off on your bind height they will NOT last due to harmonics. IMHO FYI back in the day we got about 4-5 runs on intake springs before changing...lol

Oh Vern.... dont worry I will be there, Springs are on the way - friggen overnighted... and those marks are from the HAMMER!! grrr.

Chris, yes after a discussion with my Cam guy, he mentioned the same thing. PAC... I will keep my eye on em thru the season, then replace them this winter just to be safe.

Just got off the phone with Manley tech... he mentioned the same thing... that they want the spring to run between a maximum .050 and .100 from coil bind or harmonics can cause this issue, I will double check the distance to make sure but I am sure Curtis Boggs did these correct....

many moons ago we lost 3 valves springs on one weekend. After some examination it was determined the harmonics in the set-up killed them. After some changing around we went with the Isky Tool Room springs ( Super Clean silicone wire) that's what we've used ever since. Several companies buy them from Isky and rebox them with their name on them. Good price for the quality of the spring at about 2.5x the price of a typical spring ( at least the last I checked)

Thanks John! on my last motor it had tool room springs and they worked great for over 6 seasons, those are good springs. i will be checking the installed height and coil bind distance on these to make sure but most likely change them this winter... just to be safe.

never had a issue drag racing with my springs even with all the river running, I used manleys (cost). after starting starting sprint boat racing the manleys regardless of set up barely made it a weekend went with PAC's never had a failure or huge spring pressure drop again. Vince Nelson Sr does my heads and hes done them and there set up since they where new, hes one of the best imo
