I just purchased a used Stefs oil pan and it came with
a Melling M77HV with the pickup welded on. The person
I got it from had to change pans when he installed
the engine in a different boat.

I have already purchased a Melling select 10778C
pump and disassembled it and checked/measured everything.

Should I use the M77HV or purchase a new pickup for my 10778C?
lets hear your thoughts/concerns
its only $50 for a new pickup so no big deal

Nothing wrong with the M77 IMO.

Either or. I'm running the M77HV and it seems to be workin' great.

I've been using the 10770 Melling Select for quite some time. Comes with a hardened drive shaft and a cool sticker. :)

problem with melling pumps is they have pm gears the jury is still out on the select pumps,box says steel but i hear the only way to test is to use a sharpie on the tops of the gears and if the maker fades it's a p/m gear.

if you look at this link melling no longer list it's gears as steel.

you guys can do a web search on the melling pumps with powdered metal gears for the carnage.

moroso race pumps are steel gears
and cvr pumps show steel gears
milodon is ck with sharpie as i have both with p/m and not latley

i would like to here from chris stroud on his take on the oil pump gears?

outlaw if you look at this link and read the info on mellings pump 10778c is a upgrade of the m77hv with anti-cav grooves which is good for high rpm but will reduce hot idle oil pressure.

i have two bbc one with select pump w/anti cav and a race moroso w/anti cav grooves both cold [email protected] after warm up and some run time they will idle at 25-30 lbs with 10-40 syn oil,but thats what i was told to expect with the grooved pumps,they climb right up with the tach but scared me the first time i seen the gauge.

just some info on what to expect.

Thanks Havasubyou, yeah I've been reading about
the 10778C, thats why I was considering using the MV77HV that came with the pan.
I purchased the select 10778C back in the spring
with my other engine parts, I've heard from a couple peeps today that are running the 10778C and still recommend it.
Im sending the pan back to Stefs so they can add
a couple bungs for sensors and to repair a couple cracks.
They said if I ship my pump also they would add/weld the pickup while they have the pan.

Inspection required

any oil pump, regardless of brand/re boxing, should be disassembled and inspected. Price does not assure quality, nor does brand name. Check it yourself for proper numbers inside.........Ray

Do you think I'll have problems with pressure at idle with the 10778C?

I'm running the 10778c pump with no problems:D
running RotellaT 10w40
Oil pressure is 75/80lbs cold idle up
60/70lbs hot idle 200/210deg and 80lbs all the time over 1800rpms
