A quick question to all of the mercruiser gurus out there. I have a mercruiser 260 outdrive and am considering a swap. I would like to know if the bravo one will bolt on in place of the old drive without having to drill any new holes. I want to pump up the 350 quite a bit in front of the drive and I am told that anything over stock is a problem waiting to happen. So I figured why not go to a stronger drive.... Thanks in advance.

just a thought..

I am running an alpha 1 in my 86 formula with a 425hp 500ftlb gm performance roller motor, I haven't been able to tear it up. No a bravo will not bolt up, I've been told u have to drill top two holes, ur lookin at 2 to 5 k depending on the drive, I don't see where a smallblock would ever need it.

Ok thanks for the input... I guess that answers my question. Now, are the merc 260 and an alpha one basically the same drive or should I upgrade to the alpha one? And the same question applies, if the alpha one is needed will it bolt up to the existing holes? I was thinking of running exactly what you are talking about, somewhere in the neighborhood of 375-425 horse. I want it to be completely reliable as I do a lot of running on the delta. And my wife wants through the transom exhaust... So I figure it might as well sound good and have a little cam lope.

I don't know what kind or what year boat u have but it should be an alpha. If it says 260 mercruiser that's the HP rating on ur engine.

Run the drive you have.
Do not slam the throttle from a standing start.
Do not get the boat air born at high RPM.
Do not put a big five blade prop on it.

Do change the gear oil regularly.
Do get a drive shower.


If you do break it,then change the drive to a bravo or get a different boat.

If you take care of the drive the drive will take care of you.

I have several alphas out there with built 350s, 377s, 406s and a 434, with common sense advice as stated above they will give long service. Change the oil regularly, at least every year. Also we sell the Sterndrive Engineering units, and have had zero failures, with similar engines as above, besides, they have a three year unconditional warranty. and quite reasonably priced too! TIMINATOR

Yes, people run Alphas (and they also break Alphas), but since you said you wanted "reliable", I would swap in a Bravo. The Alpha drive is only rated at 300 hp.

Here are the ratings for the following models:

Bravo One 400 hp
Bravo One X 450 hp
Bravo One XR 600 hp
