Recently bought a Cole with an outdrive and need some info. Prior to having my son tow this thing over the Sierra mountains I had him remove every water hose and drain the block, coolers, etc. I just re-installed all of the hoses and I'm concerned about the 2 hoses at the belt-driven water pump. Apparently you do not want to mix the two up (inlet/outlet). Since they could go on either way, I want to make sure I have it right. Which pump port is the inlet? The one towards the outside (starboard) of the boat, or the port toward the center of the boat? Here's a pic, and the ports face the rear of the boat as pictured. Thanks, Jocko

The way the pump is sitting in the picture, with the hose bibs to the LEFT OF CENTER FACING THE REAR OF THE PUMP. The inlet is on the bottom.

Raw water pump

B&D Marine,

I have a question about a pump if you wouldnt mind helping me out.

I have a right hand rotation engine 1988 mercruiser inboard 5.7.

the pump is mounted on the starboard side of the engine with outlets to stern the pump is original it has the aluminum pully shaft housing and the "plastic" impeller housing and the brass hose connection housing. it has NO markings as to inlet and outlet. it also has the small 1/4" drain brass plug on the brass housing as well. like a dummy i rebuilt it and didnt pay attention to the connections....
i contacted mercruise and jabsco this is what i got.

Mercruiser
; model 46-71497-C1(or CI) R.H. rotation the inlet is on the bottom "with small plug" and outlet on top. it also says to keep outlets above one another not beside each other. WELL heres where it gets funny it also say that if there is NO markings (in/out) then the connections should be opposite...

Jabsco; model 43210-0001 is a replacement and there schematic is the same as the first mercruiser statement. and said nothing about the latter.

Me; i rebuilt the pump inverted it with the outlets facing up, filled each with water and rotated the pump in the correct direction and noted which side sucked in and pushed out, by doing that the inlet (sucked) is at the bottom (plug side) and outlet (pushed)at the top.

is this correct? any information would be helpful and i would be greatful. thanks again for your time. i have the info from both pumps if you need let me know. to big for download here.
