I have just purchased a couple boats from an Estate sale , one has a 4 cylinder the other an SBC both Mercruiser drives are proported to be in good shape ,are they of any value ? is there any way to ID them easily ? Thanks Tom

Probably same drives, early alpha. 4 banger is rated either at 120hp or 140hp and the SBC at 260hp. Pretty bullet proof units as they didn't try to shove a ton of HP through them. Are you asking value as in 'parting-out'? Not alot as there are about 60 bazillion of them out there.

I can ID them if you can read the serial number. It will be on the side of the driveshaft housing, if not legible, try to read the serial number on the transom assembly. I can get the drive info from that too. It will only be 7 numbers (no letters). Mid 70's 4 cyl will be 120/140 as Carl said. The V-8 could have been a number of options.

If the serial numbers are really from the 70's, then there is a really good chance the serial number will not show up in the merc system.:wink:

So far in my experience, I've only seen the system go as far back as late 1979, Good luck.

the plate above the prop, if it's rounded off it's early lo-po only (mostly 888 sb fords) squared off is mr-1 & later good stuff (mostly sb chevys)
