Might buy a boat with a bunk motor

Long story short he's selling it for 5500 with motor or 5k without motor, he said it lost oil pressure after a rebuild and won't turn over now. Is it worth that price it has a 454 in it and is clean 21' commander Berkley jet and pretty nice interior
any thoughts

I'm assuming it needs a complete rebuild on the 454 guess it all boils down to how blown up it is... do play with fire or save another 4 k and buy a running boat

Reading this thread, I just realized that it's probably pretty thin pickins in the JYs for big-blocks- you want a good block at least- everything else is pretty cheap and easy to get...."Oh no! The heads are junk....Now I have to buy some Aluminum after-market heads...."

You know how to build an engine?

If not.. walk away, because paying someone to fix and install it is expensive.. save your $$ and get a runner.. have someone you trust look at it...

If you know your way around a BBC... go for it...

Chances are the 454 in it is a stocker, and if it don't turn over.. it will need the crank turned and new bearings plus tanked and a new oil pump... maybe getting the rods reconditioned... probably around 800-1200 at a machine shop.. You can find a decent used shortblock off CL or a rebuilder and use all the rest of what's there.. doubt the top end is hurt.. you would have to get it for a good deal, but you would know what you had then.. make him an offer. see if he has any room to move.. seen good running complete engines for under 600.00.. so you could sell off the spare parts like heads, intake, etc.. to recover some $$
It just depends on what you find.. and if you have the "understanding" to build it.. Best of luck..

I just put this one together... runs great.. 70lbs oil pressure...it's a 496(bored and stroked 454) with a big solid roller cam and an 1150 Dominator Carb..

My best friend builds motors and he said he'd help but it's a gamble, if the block is cracked or somthing lIke that itll cost alot.only reason I'm considering it is because wife likes it. The owner of the boat said ran it for 2 hrs probably after rebuild and the all of a sudden the motor started loosing oil pressure, he shut down and then wouldn't turn over... just like most of my clients I don't believe what they say, I find out for myself .so I'm assuming the worst...what do you mean by YJ?

I'm not an engine builder , am not afraid to tackle it though, my best bud builds jet boat racing motors Soni have that going for me...

I'm not either... I work as a "Millwright" and have put engines together a few times.. it's not rocket science.. but you do have to get it right...

If you have some help.. it would be a fun project.. and you will learn about engines...

Last big engine I rebuilt was in HS auto shop hahaha, ya I think it'll be a great winter project... I just keep thinking about it and am second guessing myself. I'm going make my offer, if he takes it great, if he doesn't then I'll walk. Luckily I have the ability to do that... found a nice 94 commander for 9500 ready to run but it's 4500 over what this will cost... plus it has been sitting on CL for a bit so I'm not sure that's a good price... should I wait till November/december? Is it true that boat prices go that low

I don't really consider "2 years" very recent after a rebuild. With no photos of the engine, you have to look and see if it has $500 worth of parts visible that are good,, marine oil pan, intake manifold, carb, etc? Assume the rest to be junk and you won't be disappointed later. If it lost oil pressure and won't turn over, as others have indicated, likely the bottom end is hurt, possibly even the block if it spun a main bearing or something.

Right around 10k- 8k is asking price I know one sold out of Ontario ca from a dealership for 7500 with running motor

The reason l ask about water level is, in that picture, the boat is way up on the bank. If the water level does not fluctuate, you might plan on a jet pump rebuild?
Or, at least a very thourgh inspection of it?

Looks like im going to do it, he came down on his asking price and over all I think once pulled it could just be a bottom end rebuild

Pump was in good shape, it probablly needs a new wear bering but I can do all that once motor is our
