Morse steering helm flopping around?

My steering unit is very loose. Not the cables but the actual assembly that bolts to the dash. The steering wheel moves up and down side to side. I assumed it was just loose mounting bolts but after somehow crawling under there and looking it's tightened down good and snug. I can wiggle the hub and it looks like it's internally moving. I haven't figured out how to get the hub off to pull it apart. How do get the hub off and what would cause this?

Helm is either worn out or coming apart. Typically you need a puller to get the hub off the shaft as its a tapered shaft with a key most likely and corrosion over time can be a bitch to get apart. Next problem is most morse helms are obsolete and not made any longer. Teleflex helms are different and take different cables. I might have some morse style helms around depending on what you have.

Sloppy helm

AS Rex said Morse stuff is pretty well gone. Most probably all the plastic bushings in the helm are worn out. If you cannot get a puller on the steering wheel, back off the retaining nut so that it is flush with the end of the threads, pull back on the wheel and have someone hit the end of the shaft with a brass drift. If you have an air hammer they also work for getting the wheel off. When I had my shop the air hammer was always effective.

So I pulled the adapter off finally. The adapter had a large chunk broken off where the keyway goes. The bezel also had a large crack in it. After these 2 pieces were removed the helm is moving around quite a bit, I can move it up and down at the shaft about an inch. Is it supposed to be bolted down somewhere or is the shaft adapter and bezel supposed to hold it in place?
