We're changing directions with our flat bottom and trying to decide which motor to install. We've already pulled our big motor and now we're trying to decide which motor to put back in. We have a mild 427 with iron heads, solid lifter cam and a single 750dp

We also have a 522 long block which is set up for a blower with a bowtie block, aluminum rods, big roller cam and low compression. We have a set of fresh Dart aluminum heads set up for a roller cam, which we could install on either motor. Our goal is a mild naturally aspirated motor. Obviously we'd prefer the extra cubes that the 522 offers, but I'm worried about the aluminum rods.

Which direction would you go if you had these parts to start with?

A little more background on these two motors.

The 427 is supposed to be fresh with 4 bolt mains and mild cam. It has a torquer II single plane manifold and some roller rockers. That's all we know until we drop the pan and verify which crank/rods/pistons it has.

The 522 has a forged GM crank, which has been turned down to fit the aluminum rods.

We have an extra 4.00" forged GM crank and the aluminum heads I mentioned above. We're not opposed to buying additional parts (maybe a tunnel ram with dual carbs) but we'd like to do this build on a budget.

Knowing all of this, which direction would you go?

The first thing to throw out is the budget. For some reason they don't work very well in motors that people want to live.:no:

I think you're right, if you're goal is to reach a certain speed, but my brother is putting the blown injected 540 in a different boat, so that should fulfill our desire for speed.

Our goal with this boat is to put together a nice little hotrod that we can drive up and down the river, with a few 80-90mph blasts. Plus, it's not like we're starting with junk. We have a Bowtie block, a gm block with 4 bolt mains, a couple forged cranks, a fresh pair of aluminum Dart heads, assorted pistons, rods, etc...

What I'm hoping for, is guidance from some of the guys with far more knowledge and experience than me. We have these parts (and we're willing to buy other parts) and we want to hear what combos work. Will the aluminum rods in the 522 survive extended use in a mild motor? Should I look for a tunnel ram with dual carbs, or stick with a single carb? Should I run a roller cam with solid roller lifters, or stick with a flat tappet cam? How big of a cam should I run?

That would not be me LOL.

Steelcomp Infomaniac GN 7 Obnoxious one are just a few of the people whos sugestions I would trust, there are more but my coffee hasn't kicked in yet. There is a lot of knowledge to be found here, knowing who has it is the key.

As Wild Hair has shared, those are those on the forum with a great amount of experience but here is my my .02. Cams, you will have to share more details of the eingine before cam selection can be made. Compresson ratio, valve size, runner volume, rpm you want to turn would be information needed to start. Flat tappet Vs roller, the way oils are continually having the extreme pressure additives reduced, a roller cam may in the end be a simpler choice. Aluminum rods, regardless of what you may hear and there will be much discussion, aluminum rods have a defined life. Are the rods new? In a a mild engine, other than the "cool factor" not really sure there is much benefit to offset the risk of using aluminum rods. You will hear those who will tell you they had aluminum rods that lasted "forever". All I can say is every engine where there was an actual performance benefit to the aluminum rods, the rods are changed out at specific intervals.

Boat info??

Personally, I'd like to know a little more about the boat... Brand name, hull weight, v drive * and gears on hand, props to choose from..... etc etc....
