Speed cameras get boost for big holiday travel day

If gas prices aren't enough to threaten your wallet during holiday travel, consider a photo speed-enforcement ticket.

Motorists traveling any stretch of Interstate 10 or Interstate 40 across Arizona between 3 and 11 p.m. today will encounter speed-enforcement devices every 20 miles.

The move is part of a nationwide strategy to keep highways safe on a busy travel day, said Roger Vanderpool, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

AAA officials estimate about 41 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles from home this Thanksgiving weekend. About 33.2 million are expected to drive to their destinations.

DPS is using its entire fleet of 42 speed-enforcement vans and about 20 fixed units to cover all of I-10 and I-40 in Arizona.

Units are triggered when a driver is going 10 mph or more past the posted speed limit.

Violators are notified by mail within 30 days and must pay a fine of roughly $185.

The civil violation does not have any bearing on a driver's license, but anyone caught traveling at 20 mph or more over the speed limit will face a criminal charge.

DPS operates more than 60 mobile-speed cameras.

$185. Wonder how long it takes the average worker in Arizona (after taxes) to make $185. The insanity that is going on today, is what is going to produce the next revolution. The people will only stand so much. And to think, a private company is going to profit on this.

I saw them flashing in Phoenix last weekend on the I-10. I also saw no one speeding much till out in the desert away from town.

Wow - if you run a 100 mile run at 80 or so would you get 5 tickets?? Is this only in AZ, I'm running to parker Friday to pickup a trailer and really wouldn't like to get 10 speeding tickets!

No, but only cause I read about them being in Phoenix a week ago on one of these forums and could see the flashing 20 miles away from Phoenix. I figured it was not a photo shoot and not that many transformers were blowing up the wind being calm and all. So me being the brainiac that I am put 2 and 2 together and set the cruise at 65.

One good thing at least in the AZ desert is most is marked 75. So you should be able to go 80 and be within the margin.

The speed liimit outside of the metro areas is 75 MPH. The radar trailers are set at 10 MPH above that. So 85 MPH and above gets flashed.

Does anyone really HAVE to go faster than that? Especially while towing?

Towing is one thing BC, whole different deal.

But out in the middle of the desert?

Our roads and highways were built for so much and deserve so much more, don't you think?

If that weren't the case then what about the silver state classic and the long beach gran prix?

That is pretty broad statement there.

There is nothing better than motoring along at 130-145-160-175 down a deserted patch of highway.
