Really interesting show on the housing market and crash. It really changed my perspective on it.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29163182/

There is a trailer on the link but the show is actually a 2 hour special.

It has nothing to do with politics. It has more to do with packaging up these sub prime loans because Wall Street was selling them to investors over seas. The demand was so high, they were able to package up dogshit and sell it.

Greed.

Simply put:

The regulators were trying to regulate Fannie May and Freddie Mac and ensure that they had reserves for predicted foreclosures and mortgage failures.

Unlike banks, these institutions were not required to carry reserves. And, by some weird method, the government (read you and I), backed this crap. So when the house of cards did come undone, we hve the economy we are now facing.

Listen to the regulator. It's key!!! :)coffee

But did you watch the show? They interview Greenspan, he had no clue what the mortgage companies were doing in the sub prime market. The investors believed the banks and the SEC would "police" the industry. In the mean time, nobody was watching what was going on until the bad mortgages started to default.

Again, it has nothing to do with Democrat, or Republican. It was pure greed, and the Wall Street banks were cleaning up.

In the news today 5.9 million more foreclosures in the next 4 years, have only seen 1 million since 2006.

The bankers had formulas to take subprime loans, package them with other loans and sell them as triple AAA investment. Whats their to regulate at that point? It's triple a. They had people banging down their doors to buy the crap.

Update: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Invest in Lawmakers
Published by Lindsay Renick Mayer on September 11, 2008 11:26 AM | Permalink | Comments (33)
When the federal government announced two months ago that it would prop up mortgage buyers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, CRP looked at how much money members of Congress had collected since 1989 from the companies. On Sunday the government completely took over the two government-sponsored enterprises, and we've returned to our data to bring you the updates, this time providing a list of all 354 lawmakers who have gotten money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (in July we posted the top 25). These totals are based on data released electronically from the FEC on Sept. 2 and include contributions to lawmakers' leadership PACs and candidate committees from the floundering companies' PACs and employees. Current members of Congress have received a total of $4.8 million from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, with Democrats collecting 57 percent of that. This week we also wrote about how much money lawmakers had invested of their own money in the companies last year--a total of up to $1.7 million.

Greenspan is a liar trying to save face. His name is all over this mess. Just 3 years ago he was considered a national hero. Not so much now.

Political pressure allowed the business world a pass to make all this happen. Those Politicians who I and BW pointed out simply asked for "CHANGE", easy credit and agreed to look the other way when the private sector found a way to make their wishes come true. Bad policy opened up Pandora's box.

Furthermore. I see this as a crystal ball into the future of the current administration. They feel in order to make things fair. You can give the same amount of credit, trust or responsibility to those who have not and call it fairness or trickle up economics. This will surely backfire just as giving 500k to a gardener in Santa Ana to buy a house did.

To the politicians the ends justified the means. Remember they need to get re elected.

Sure, but don't be fooled into thinking politicions are doing something because they believe in something. It's all about money, if the banks weren't lining the pockets of every politician in Washington this would have never happened. Greenspan probably is a liar, I don't doubt that.

Absolutely correct! Remember that you tube clip I posted with these idiots standing up for fanny & Freddie. They are the enablers.

I believe in a economy based on capitalism the enablers are the ones to blame when things go wrong. The rest of us are just following the rules of the system assuming those who make policy (the enablers) know what the hell they're doing.

Question is why do we elect people with no business education or business experience to make policy in this country? If we elect nothing but wall street capitalists we get a overly aggressive version of capitalism that will lay you and I off for .50 cents and hour. On the flip side you end up with what we have now. You'll see how this will turn out. I'll be worse than when the capitalist rape the system. The housing issue will be wash, rinse and repeat and all tax payers will get stuck with the bill. Because a 4 bedroom home is a human right.:)sphss

I'm a bit of a protectionist at this point in time. We need to save our manufacturing base here in this country. But not with buying the damn business. De regulate US manufacturing and give them the lowest tax base possible and they will flourish here on our soil. So will you and I as those employees buy homes from me and boat parts from you. Trickle down works for those who work.

I know what your saying Paul, but it is politics.

Clinton and the democrats pushed hard to put into place a system where housing was available to as many Americans as possible. This was a noble attempt.

This led to the government backing the two large mortgage lenders to underwrite the loans, which were subprime because these folks did not have good credit and typically, not good jobs. They created a history on their own, as we all have.

When these institutons lowered the lending standards, the Republicans then tried to apply the same regulations as the banking and financial industries operate under. This would have required that reserves be held for bad loans. In fact, because they were subprime, a larger reserve should have been required.

Then you observe the Democrats talking down to the financial and regulatory experts.

Without the regulations around their necks, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac then went to town on lending. Yes, the credit agencies listed them as high grade investment paper. You know why???? BECAUSE THE FOCKING GOVERNMENT WAS BACKING THEM. Who you might say? THE FOCKING DEMOCRATS YOU SEE ON THE VIDEO GAVE ASSURANCES.

Then you had something even more idiotic happen. You had AIG and other insurance groups providing insurance that this paper would not go bad. (60 minutes some weeks ago) Are you kidding me???? The paper was rotten from the start. The government HAD to save AIG. They were backing the bad loans with insurance and getting around further regulation.

Yes, there is blame to go all around. But be sure, politicians are not economists. And most of them are poorly educated or attornies (which is the same thing in my opinion). And thus you have the collapse of the economic system.

Bottom line. Lack of regulation, circumventing the system, greed (which worked in every direction including the politicians) and absolutel stupidity to by pass normal lending practices because the government promised to back the securities.

And now you can watch the aftermath daily on TV. :)coffee
