I just bought a 21 daytona for a very good price.... the only downfall is it was rigged with the dreaded OMC Stringer drive. I plan to re rig the boat this winter with black hawk or bravo 1 with a 2in lower , but looking for some advice for now.. How many were rigged with this drive. I talked to Bob Leach and he said they did a few but i havent been able to find anyone that actually had one. I know everyone is gonna say its a POS drive but id really like to run it this season as it does run and float! anyone have prop size experience ? currently building a drive shower and ot exhaust to try and keep it a little cooler!

I had 22 Daytona with a black hawk I just sold it last Oct I have a lot of experience with the black hawk first thing is you can still get parts for it besides the vertical shaft but max machine will make you one an props good luck I had every size but they went with it now the 22 has a different bottom an X dimension never new any one with it on a 21 I had 560hp up to my black hawk with 31p it ran just over 100mph the down side was the water pick up is not that good at high speeds you need a pick up on the hull

I had a '77 electric-shift stringer-drive for years (sold it this year) and never had a bit of trouble with it other than shift wire insulation that rotted from age. Was the smoothest / quietest operating outdrive ever. That said... they are not idiot proof. Keep an eye on the large rubber boot that seals the outdrive to the transom... If it cracks from dry-rot you'll sink her in a hurry. Don't operate it too much with the drive tilted up as that wears out the ball-gears (which are easily replaced). Recommended props (for my 19' Cobalt) were a 15" pitch for skiing or a 17" for cruising. I ran a 16".... but my boat was only a 235hp / 45mph deal. With more h.p. I would have opted for a 19" pitch prop for top end.

If it's an electric shift, you'll want to keep the idle rpm's low as possible and run an aluminum prop, and do not slam it from forward to reverse too quickly or unnecessarily. Once the shift is engaged, they are tough as nails. Electric shift lowers require special oil, or the shift "springs" will slip.

Thanks for the advice but the drive is long gone. After replacing the Transom boot, water pump shaft/upper main shaft, and ball gears i gave up and am in the process of converting to a jet! OF coarse All of the problems happened on different trips. The straw that broke the camels back was when the sbc let go. Started thinking and wasnt going to be happy with the 69 mph that the boat was running and for fear that the drive wouldnt handle more power i made the decision to convert to jet. Thanks for ur time!
