My Sister in law was stupid enough to buy another jetta. This one is a 06 i think. Well the tranny is going out 4 months after the warranty has expired. VW wants 9 Grand to replace.

Seems a bit high but what do i know.

Your thoughts?

A little back story.. Her original Jetta was a 02. it burned a quart of oil a month right off the show room floor. What did VW service have to say about that? "Ma'am, new cars just burn oil. Its something new cars do"

I want that one.....because it's red.

Should never have bought one in the 1st place.......and the 2nd one just adds to the.....well you know.

WOW 9 grand......

should have bought one of those fidelis extended warrantees (JUST KIDDING)(they likely wouldn't pay for it either)

If she regularly serviced the vehicle at the dealership (to service the car correctly according to what's in the service manual) they should be bending over backwards to help her remedy the bad situation. Talk to the higher ups if that is the case.....take your grievence to VW (the manufacturer) if that does not get you the fix. I'm sure they will not like hearing that you're not getting helped by "an authorized dealership"....cause it makes them (the manufacturer) look bad.

Marketing seem to pull you in......your experience with the make either keeps you a buyer for life or someone who shuns the company (granted the person needs a brain with a memory of an elephant)

There is a lesson to be learned here.....a hard lesson.

Goooood luck.

Find a trusted repair shop, heve a low mile unit installed or a reman unit with 36K nation wide warranty. Should be less than $2500 in any case

LOL, I made the SAME *UCKIN mistake except mine was used. Bought an 2002 Jetta with a 1.8T in 2006. Drove it a couple weeks and noticed the tranny was slipping like crazy. Tried to do the lemon law but was told it's 15 days vs 30.:|err So long story short I bought a used tranny online for 1200 bucks and the local shop wants 1000 to in and out the tranny. When I initially called the dealer they said the tranny itself can be over 4K. So I do think that's kind of high. What tranny is it?

Park it in front of the dealership with a sign indicating it is a POS brand....Ray
moneypit is right, actually even if its not a legitimate repair that would be covered, they will go far out of there way when they realize you are having a neg effect on their ability to make a profit. I know a guy that got his 15yr car he had owned for a few months bought back when they realized how much he was costing them when he picketed the front for 3 weeks straight claiming they sell lemon cars. they gave him all his money back and the car needed an engine.

thats funny....

Well she is bouncing aroudn dealerships now trying to get it worked out. Sucks for her. Some are saying replace the torque converter some are saying replace the trans. Dealer cost for a 05 tranny is supposidly 7K so i guess i understand where the 9K came from. I told her to stop asking for a new transmission and start looking at used or remanufactured.

What kills me is that service techs are telling me that a car that burns a quart a month is no biggie and that its normal for a car to burn up to a quart per 800 miles... I dont know about you but if my Toyota burned a quart every 800 miles i would not own it long.

I like the park in front idea and picket.
If one does not have that kind of time... put an ad in your local craigslist and foward the dealer a link. Do this every day and every time it gets flagged. As long as the truth is in there...well, so be it.
Wags

Also, going up above your dealership to vw complaint line will help usually. Send them the craigslist link also.

Shuan this really sucks , heres however some info. My other business inspects these and lots of other vehicle (under svc contracts and extended warranty) with some regularity Assuming this is the trans axle I think it is , they are are "exchange" unit only (not field serviceable repairs at dealer level ) The techs for these, Audi's and Bmw (and more) to my knowledge ,no longer even recieve training to do but the very most minor trans repairs (flash reprogram etc) We refer to these as "sealed" units, heck you have to have a scan tool just to check fluid level correctly in many late transaxles (no dip stick) The Quoted price does however seem very high, most of my claims have been closer to 5k (ish) (could be more if a 6 speed?) I suggest you (she) carefully review all dlr paper work and docs also check with your states consumer affairs . Have a "sitdown",not with dlr service personel but with the STG Sales manager and F & I and try to negotiate a deal . If all else fails look for a qualified ATRA independant shop that is qualified to actually repair this unit in your area or find a LKQ (like kind & and quality) used unit to have installed I'll get you some numbers to call Tom

Rhonda (who runs our other business) say to google in the complete vin , might be some info out there re recent repairs , "hidden warranty" etc Call if I can help Tom

BTW FWIW the industry standard for years (re oil consuption) has been between a qt in 1K to 1500 , some mfgs use a "bell curve" eg more oil use in the begining , the least in the middle years and increasing consumption as miles increase

Delemorte here's the link I used to tracked down my tranny.. The company ended up being Texas Green Leaf because they were the only ones that had one at the time. I did a couple searches of your year and make and assumed a couple things and a couple places in Phoenix (used my area code) popped up. It's just something to keep in mind.

I've been a professional transmission builder for 25 yrs.there is no more expensive trans (in cars) THAN THAT ONE .We've tried to rebuild them & quit.WE were getting about $5000 for them & had nothing but problems.very few trans shops will touch them .you need a VAG scanner even to properly scan it. sucks to be her.I think you will see alot of cheap used vw's for sale. I'd go 4 a used one & hope 4 the best.:)st
