I just picked up my first boat, 1996 Caliber1 206 skyer. it has a 350 EFI with a alpha1 drive. the only issue I have is the trim gauge dose not work. Is there something I can look at and see? The trim works just the gauge not working. Thanks

Look to see if it has a cable along the side of the hyd trim ram or a electric sending unit that looks round on the side of the drive u can run the trim up then look to see if it all the way up then go down if u have an electric guage most likly its the guage or sending unit I have seen them fail

Starboard side of the Gimbal Ring is a round sender with two phillips head screws top and bottom. That is the sending unit for the trim gauge. Either the sender needs to be replaced or the gauge. Go to the back of the gauge, turn the key to on, not running, and jump the terminal marked "S" to a good known ground on the back of a gauge. Note: you have to determine that the gauge is getting 12 volts and a good ground. If the gauge pegs it is the sender. If the gauge does nothing, it is probably the gauge.

I would check the wiring. will look like a lamp cord 2 wire system in the rear of the engine from the drive. Chafe damage will render it inop

that was it, wires broken right out of the sender. can I replace it and splice the wires or dose the hole thing need to come out?

The sender is similar to a potentiometer. It varies the amount of resistance to ground. If you splice the wires and the splice is not 100% sealed, they will corrode very quickly.

you couldtry seperating the wires using heat shrink over each splice & then have a larger heat shrink to go over the whole thing for strength. But it is best to have solid wire through the transom
