I was looking at the NJBA rules for tech and I have a question about flywheel covers. In the rules it says "all boats must have a 360-deg flyweel cover made of productoin aluminum or the equivalant material". What is production aluminum or the equivalant material ? Are those thin stamped looking covers ok or are we talking about something like a scater shield ? Also does this mean the motor plate needs to come all the way to the bottom to fully enclose the flywheel ?
Im building my project with the hopes of being out there someday (in a slow class) and want to do it right the first time. :D

thin stamped cover is fine. Like the one from Duane at HTP or Lightning Mfg. and no the motor plate does not have to come to the floor.

I can not speak for the current NJBA tech, but when we were teching for the njba, most flywheel covers ,including the fabricated one from Lightning was accepted. Those rules should really be re-writen. There is not a marine flywheel cover that would contain a flywheel explosion at a high rpm, or a driveline for that matter. What they are really asking you to do is make your best effort to cover the rotating parts, the best you can. The Njba is a great club, and will not screw with you. They appreciate you racing with them, And with that being said, I am sure that you will not be turned away, unless you are a total hazard. What you really want to consider is the flex plate or flywheel. If using a flex plate, we have found that the CSR or any heavy duty SFI approved is best. The Pioneer replacements that you get at your local auto parts stores should not be allowed, as we have seen many of these fail. The sfi approved wheels are good, and some are better than others. Use your best judgment, Joe.

If the stamped covers are ok than mine should be fine, its wayyyy stronger than those.

The reason I asked about the motor plate was because there was a miscomunication with the waterjet when cutting my rear plate and it doesnt reach to the bottom of the flexplate :(((((( . I could have an "inspection cover" made to reach the bottom of the flexplate and cover if its needed ?

thanks for the info, Shelfo.

Propless- like Joe said, the motor plate doesn't have to surround the flywheel, just the cover.

Thanks again, it looks like I'll be ok :D . I'll post some pics of the project soon, right now its just a pile of parts covered in fiberglass dust, but I still love it :rolleyes:
