noobie thoughs 383 stroker

I have a non-performance boat, but the family likes it. It is an 87 sea ray sorento with a merc 260 and alpha one.

I know the leg is good to about 400 ponies. I have a stoker 383 sitting in the shed that I could freshen up and drop in. It now has fulie 192 heads, an Weiand sp2-180 intake and I can not remember the isky cam I put in, but it was a long time ago.

The rotating mass was balanced.

I was pondering comp cam, hyd roller, weiand stealth dual plane, and new heads for the rollers and springs.

I would pitch the qjet for a 650 or 700 cfm holley or deamon.

What parts do you think I should use to "warm" the engine up a bit. I know this will not be a huge speed deamon, but with 400ish hp would be much better than merc did.

Thanks in advance!

Get rid of the fuelie or double hump heads and get some vortec heads...even fully ported fuelie heads won't hold their own agains a set of cheap stock vortec heads.
Are you sure the alpha one can handle it?
that is what I have been told. I was thinking of a set of worldheads with a 170 runnewr and 67cc chambers in a 2.02 and 1.60 14 degree valve angle. The old heads I put on when I first did this motor in 84, all the new stuff was not avalible then.

I can get a set of these heads for 250.00 for a bare set, not bad.

I am open to suggestions.

BTW, if stock vortec heads are as good I would do that, what do you think between the world and vortec?

thanks, I think you advice is exactly right.
Am I sure?

no,

All of the research I have done and talking with others indicate the alpha will take 400 to 450.

I am trying to get ahold of merc engineering to confirm, but I am not of much significance when compaired to their normal work load, lol.

I just did one of these for a customer, he did put the GLM exhaust on the boat and he did have a set of AFR 195's on it. Let me find the e-mail with the power..
466#/ft @ 4400
433HP @ 5500

Torque was 423#/ft at 2900 rpm

Do you know what cam and intake he was using?

If you know the build specs could you please post.

I do not know that exhaust, as I have been out of rodding for a few years.

Well, that is a cool site, and I know know about GLM.

From the look of their manifolds I have 4" center riseres on my engine. I will look and verify tomorrow.

How much exaust will the stock y tube take?

Thanks, we are on the way!

Thanks for what you have done sofar.:)

My cam specs, hyd roller
Airgap intake
well hell, I have been doing some checking with stern drive folks an merc engineering, the alphas are only good to 300 officially and 350 by the guys who run them hard.

That means, only a mild cam change, new intake and a holly or edelbrock 650, balance and reinstall. not a lot of fun, but the bucks are big either.

I will have to build a jet or vdrive with the kid when he gets a bit older, hmm.. start to collect parts, you know like a hull. I wonder how I will be able to convince the wife that that hull has been out in the barn for years under the tarp.:D:D

any suggestions on intakes and cams?

Chris, I will give you a call about your cams also.

Thanks
