Just fired up my 460 to break in the cam,runnin at 2000 rpm ,on the hose (no driveshaft). Being that this is my first boat ,I don't really know whats normal. I don't see any water coming out of my o/t water injected bassetts.I shut her down cause the headers were gettin orange at the bends just after the flange.only seeing about 6 psi on my water gauge. Motors not getting too hot.
should I see water or steam out the headers? is it normal for the headers to get that hot held @ 2000 for 5-6 minutes on the hose?Thanks Don

Water should be in the headers at 2,000rpm, may have to adjust your water valve on the headers. Pipes may be glowing as well do to retarded timing and buring some of the fuel in the pipes.

X2 to what Travis said.

When I used to run wet headers I always had water at about 1700 rpm. You should have plenty of noticeable steam/water out of the exhaust at 2000 rpm.

What are you seeing for timing?

timings at 18 at 2000 .didn't what to idle it till the cam was broken in. do you get good water in the headers even on the hose with about 6psi on the gauge ??
I haven't had a chance to set floats on carb ,will that influence the header temp?
I ran the motor 5 times @ 2000 for about 5minn each time . Is it safe to call the cam broken in?

you need to close the valve on the exit side of your watter lines (whear your water dumps back out of your boat) since your not MAKING PREASHER WITH YOUR PUMP. or squease the water line closed with vice grips until watter starts to come out your headders. do not stop flow threw your moter compleaty or it will get hot! :)bulb

You are running it on the hose, you have to turn the water up a little more to get the valve to open, the RPM won't open the valve unless the boat is in the water...Have an inline water valve in the hose so you can control the water flow while running on the trailer..

Rule number 1, never have water going through the headers at low RPM (1500+)...

Rule number 2, engine on-water on, water off-engine off...;)

Rule number 3, don't touch orange headers :)grn

I learned a few of these rules last summer .I had JUST got the boat ,hooked up the hose ,turned it on ,ran the boat ,didn't see any water out the headers so I closed off the exit valve all most completely,stalled the motor ,filled the cyl,s:)grn.understaneding what I had just done ,pulled the plugs & shot water all over:)sphss crash course! Now i'm Very carefull with rule 2 ,I knew rule 3 .rule 1 however, I have a valve at the hook up at the boat,hose on full blast,lots of volume out the back .
from what I have read, running on the hose should be kept to a minimum right?

Water is water the engine doesnt care where you get it from. The OT headers are run by water pressure, Not just water. Remember it comes from the pump, when you step on the throttle you are increasing the speed of the pump there for the water pressure is increased. Depending on what you use to regulate the pressure to the headers Most likley a "T" Valve (common) it will open up the passage for water to run to the headers say at 2K RPM or 1800 depending on how you have it set.

You said the hose is on full blast, thats kind of scary. Water faucets can put out say 60 PSI or so. Way to much for the motor. What kind of valve are you running at the water inlet to the motor? Water pressure relieve?

I agree that a house tap has 50-60 psi,then it splits to right & left side of motor,fills motor,and has unrestrited exhaust( with valve fully open)leaving the system.I'm thinking thats why I see only like 5-6 psi on my gauge. the house system has that pres. but is feed with much more from city.

I use Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer in all of my toys boat trucks(3) atvs diesel generator(25kw) even my lawn mowers. I believe this is a great product. it makes it all run smother and quieter.


there is a thread in on the dyno started buy chevy jet called cam break in like everything else every one has their opinion on what oil should be used but one thing most commonly agreed on is add something to help the cam break in .

Great thought and hopefully not to late! before you fire again get a zinc additive in the oil NOW!

Ol Guy is right about pinching the exit line to increase pressure! But I was thinking :))sphss) that the Tee valve could be stuck also! Very simple to check! WT:)devil

You probably needed more timing if the headers were glowing, when the headers were making lots of heat you probably should have advanced timing some.

Unfortunately, starting and stopping the engine during camshaft break-in may have already caused damage.

I checked the valve before I assemble it ,it's ok.
I really don't think there's a problem now that I understand it better. I think because the water pressure in the motor is low & doesn't change with rpm as well as bassett say's 1900+ rpm(I was @ about 2000) is why I didn't see any water in the headers.
From here I"ll put in the driveshaft & put it in the water and see how things are!:)devil
