I was having a loss of oil pressure problem after a hard pass. Start a pass at 70 psi and by the end of a 1000' or so I was down to 30psi and falling. I was told by a couple of the NJBA guy's they had this same problem and getting rid of the Dooley pan fixed it. I went with a Williams aluminum pan. He recommended running the Moroso p/u. I bough the part # he gave me. When installed on the pump the actual P/U doesn't sit level. On the "high" side I have the need 5/16" clearance, but on the "low" end I only have 1/16" between the p/u and pan bottom.
Question I have, is this welded crooked on purpose (hold down tab) to stop some oil spinning vortex issue, or is this a F-up? I can't find any info on their web sight that helps.

Save yourself a lot of grief and Throw that pick-up as far as you can!!...I had one break, my buddy had one break, even after tack welding it to the pump....it cost me 2 rods plus a rebuild I didnt need to pay for, Oh my buddy his was worse

I'm open to recommendations. What did you use? When I pressed the pan builder for recommendations on a p/u, this is the one he recommended.

Several of the local fast guy's and a few NJBA people recommended Williams Fabrication. They're local here in Elsinore. He was easy to work with and customized the pan as needed with extra bungs for sensors and drainbacks, as well as oil drain location, any starter issues or special needs to fit your application (depth and width). This is a 12 qt to the bottom of windage tray. It's a very nice piece and it was a little cheaper than what I was quoted for an Olsen or Armondo's, and Stef's oil pan.

X2 on throwing that pick up away. I would go back to the pan builder and tell him it's not satisfactory. If you want a good marine pickup, call Stefs but have the pan dimensions on hand.

Not sure how this works for you drag guys, put that thing is the wrong place for anything I ever built. Thing looks like its right in front the rear gate, and outside the windage tray area, maybe even directly under the 2 rear cylinders.
People get the misconception that windage is all about spinning cranks. Its just as much about descending pistons 5000 ft per second. so you have 2 blow 4.25" plus guns aiming 60 mph air at 45* to the oil surface 4" away right at the area you are trying to pickup oil. I don't know about you, but I could make quite a mess with that arrangement.

I'm guessing we should be writing post like that without offering up something.
First, I would give the windage tray my best frizbee backhand.
Second, you see the piece welded to the back of the pan next to where the pump? Something tells me the pickup is suppose to under that. Its on the wrong side for a circle boat, but thats here nor there for a drag deal. Not sure who makes a pickup that would get it there.
But if it was going in my boat, I would get a Stefs screen in the pan hook or by crook, or what ever it took. But that just me.
Then I would get a pickup that puts the box next to the pump, near the main cap, the best I could, something like this. Not necessarily this one, just something like it. Some thing like this is going to get that pump closer to being under that welded piece than the one you have, and out from under the pistons, even if under the rear counterweight. Anything but under the pistons.

BTW pretty sure the pickup you have is for a street strip pan with a sump.

Thanks guy's I appreciate the input. I agree this p/u never looked right to me but?? I think a call to Stef's is in order. Bob, thank you for explaining what you see, your the consummate Maestro, always teaching. I really didn't consider the down force of the piston into the windage equation, just the spinning crank, but I went and looked and I see what your saying.

I don't think everything is necessarily black and white and I may sound a bit like a purist, but I find it particularly odd than a custom oil pan manufacturer would not make a dedicated pickup tube for his custom creation.

We not only make custom pan and pickup over here but in many cases we reject/modify the designs of the common, mass produced pans and pickups that are made and sold by the commercial companies, and I'd think a custom pan manufacturer would offer something both better and specifically suited as well.

Nothing is black and white when it comes to oil pans. Things I swore could not work do, and things I thought would be an improvement were anything but.
Specially when it comes to eliminating power rob.

But I agree 100%. You can fab a an like that and not have the ability to fab a pickup. Not buying it. Even if the pan is built around an existing pickup, then supply that pickup to assure that is the one used. How much thought could be in a pan design if the builder leaves it open to what pickup the owner uses.
If the motor destroys itself, I guess he can always point at the pickup and say "well there's you problem, you used XYZ pickup"
