Whats good / whats bad? Never had my foot to the carpet for more than 8 seconds or so AKA I have no idea lol

Conventional or Syn ? Cruise temp and max temp ?

For typical cruising it's good to get the temp close to 200 deg if not 210-220 that is where you'll burn out the water in the oil (condensation) Peak temp for conventional oil I wouldn't exceed 225, but some say 240 is fine, for very long. If the rest of your engine can handle it Syn oil can handle 280-300 and the oil will be okay but parts wont be.

I run the Mobil One at 200-215 cruise and 230-240 after some really hard passes. I wouldn't think of running a boat without a cooler ever again.

Below 180 NEVER hammer on the engine can cause damage.
180-220 Range Very good for conventional and synthetic
220-240 Fine for syn, with convention you need to monitor stuff and run short burst
240-260 Okay for syn, conventionals will break down quickly. An engine in this range will need more maintenance.
260+ Syn will work but engine maintence will be greatly increased. With conventionals the engine will not live long at all.

For those with hyd rollers. Clean oil is your friend. Anyone running a stout hyd roller set up with hyd roller lifters will extend the life greatly with a scheduled maintence program.

Above is not the gosple but good guidelines we have found over the years.

I'm running a dry sump system with a cooler, problem I see is it's a race boat and the 3 water valves are set up to be run by a navigator. 1 for cooling oil, 1 for engine water and 1 for ballast tank in front. The ballast tank and water valve for engine temp no big deal but the other can be if I'm runnin by myself or with someone that forgets to keep an eye on the gauges.


My question is can I set up a thermostat to regulate the oil temp at 220? I'm not exactly sure why these boats run manual controls for oil cooling and if someone does could you fill me in as to why??

I'm running a Olsen cooler and remote filter and can't get any kind of temp. in the oil while cruising. Is anyone using an oil thermostat and if so what kind.

If you are running full flow pressure to the oil cooler you may need to split the flow. Maybe put a tee in the line or a gate valve so that you can regulate how much water goes into the cooler :)bulb.

Our system has a a gate valve out of the pump if we don't shut it down the full flow of the water reduces the oil temp to less than 170*. By closing the valve we are able to get the oil temp to 200-210 (it will hold that temp for 14 miles at 3,900 rpms) and the water temp to 155-160 or so.

That's good info CP. I am in the process of adding a cooler and had actualy thought about using it on the water out side. Have you (or anyone else) ever tried this?
Figured it would help the oil get up to temp, and as long as it still was able to keep the temp reasonable it would be best case!?!

Canton (212° ) and Earls (180° I believe) both make nice oil temp thermostats. For those who have not rigged yet, many oil cooler companies offer coolers with built in oil t-stats.

Thermostatic controlled coolers are very common on the bigger performance boats. The oil is routed around the cooler until it hits the rated temp, then goes through the cooler. Just like a water system. Look in eddie marine or rex..if they don't have them eikert (sp?) does I bet.
