Hey guys,
I have been working on my 76' sleekcraft (rebel I think). It has an Olds 455 that I think has a spun rod bearning. Long story short I have found another 455 that I tore down and am prepping to build using parts from both motors. My question is when you "open up" the oil returns in the heads do you also open up the hole in the block that goes to the valley? My second question is whether a 10 quart pan is worth the money. I dont want to worry about top end oil issues. Im not looking for a ridiculous boat just something to get out on to ski, tube, cruise.... I plan on limiting the RPMs to 4000 or less with the limiter set at 42-4300. Any thoughts? Thanks

You will need to install 4 oil restrictors in the block under the main bearings to restrict oil to the cam as well as a 10 to 14 quart oil pan.
You also need a high volume oil pump.You can get the parts at Mondello Performance Products in Paso Robles,CA
Joe Mondello that designed this oiling system for Oldsmobile Racing has passed away but the new owner:)Unsure( heard he is a DICK) has all these parts ;)

mondello's is a joke. WHen i had my 455 biggest mistake i did was buy anything from that place. You need to track town timinator on the boards and his oiling aritcile.

This guy also knows his shit..builds good power olds, and doesn't believe in any oil restriction at all, whatsoever.

BTR Performance

Mind you, he's not really in the jet boat scene but he has some very good vids on youtube, and his book is worth getting if you're into olds.

if anyone has a used 10 quart oil pan please let me know. Like everyone (except for the lottery winners out there). I'm on a budget.

mondello's is a joke. WHen i had my 455 biggest mistake i did was buy anything from that place. You need to track town timinator on the boards and his oiling aritcile.

This guy also knows his shit..builds good power olds, and doesn't believe in any oil restriction at all, whatsoever.

Mind you, he's not really in the jet boat scene but he has some very good vids on youtube, and his book is worth getting if you're into olds.

Olds boat motors

everyone has an a opinion on the olds but most hate them, thats fine. you yould be better off puttin a chevy in it unless you know what your doin, I have a heavy boat with an olds runnin 75 at about 4900 rpm. but you want to understand them. unless you like the olds I would go to a chevy. If you like I can help you go in the rite direction.

Interesting. Built several 455's using Mondelo technology. Nothing but good luck for me. Dont know whos answering the phone there but everyone I call on the left coast seems like a dick at first. Maybe an open minded attitude instead of knowing it all would help.

Joe Mondello was clearly an innovator and Icon in the Hot Rod world , I met him in a local hardware store shortly after he moved here to my area (8 miles north) years ago and although I found him to be "Cantankerous" to say the least I always respected his knowledge and shrewd business capabilities . I'll be the first to admit that much of the information I gleaned from asking him questions and consulting him (when he wasn't on the phone) made him very little money from me but when he was available Joe would impart his knowledge and info on his passion (Oldsmobiles) freely. I remember a huge smile from him one afternoon , not from mechanical things but rather when I gave him a bucket of aquatic plants from my pond (for his) He also once took time to give me a "demo" of his famous VO Twister doorslammer in his back parking lot.... Like him or not he was a significant contributor to not only the Drag race world but also to Performance boating RIP Joe

The man won the jet class in the Parker 9 hr enduro 2 years in a row with a 455 powered Spectra. I think he knew a thing or 2 about keeping an Olds alive.
The third year,Joe won the Parker 9 hour jet class with a 496CI BBC.Rick Flowler who worked at
Spectra boats drove the Spectra Jet boat.Joe could make chevys live too. RIP Joe :happy:

Thanks. I was racking my brain trying to remember who he was teamed up with on the deal.
Joe knew his way around a internal combustion engine.

Interesting, the guys that are being touted on this thread as "OLDS EXPERTS" aren't exactly household name in the performance industry, let alone iconic legends. Wonder why? Think it could have anything to do with Joe doing more in one year then any of them do in a life time? Joe was squeezing HP out of Oldsmobiles and making them live before any of them could spell Oldsmobile.

When I was a young puppy, this was one of my favorite cars running regularly at Lions. Never let it me said that a jap can't drive. Sush could pedal a car. Fuel altereds were probably one of the hardest things to get down the track, and Sush was one of the best.

Joe's shop was just down the street from my dads
can't tell how many times we had lunch together
Super nice guy :))THumbsUp yet tough as nails at times
It's people like Joe that we went to see race
and got us to want to race the Parker too

Didn't say i know it all, just saying i ran a stock 455 original motor in my cruiser which was 30 years old before i sold it with no problems whatsoever. The know it all is the guy who others have also called a dick on this forum who answers the phone over at Mondello's, he's the one who's the know it all. Also, on the olds forums, they've had the same run in with him. Taking nothing away from the legend, Joe Mondello, though, but the true know it alls are the ones that answer the phone at his place nowadays.
