I am pulling the olds so I can clean up the bildge, and put a coat of paint in the whole engine compartment. The Olds aint broke (yet), but it is an olds. Sooo, I was wondering what you guys have out there for "lower" performance bbc. I dont have much coin right now, but I figured while I had the olds out I would check around. I do check the parts spam, but most posted there are "high performance" and with high end parts. Just lookin for something that doesnt puke oil out the valve covers at wot. BTW, I read the rules and believe I am "between the lines", but maybe not, tell me if I am wrong.

PS- I will trade the olds in if it has value to anyone, but doubt it. 1971 (F block, G heads), runs good, but not excellent. I keep it under 4500 for the most part. Edelbrock torker intake, GIL ot headers (no where near new, but shiny from a distance, Mallory dual points dizzy.

Not sure where you are but I've seen quite a few rebuildable BBC's on Craigslist for pretty good prices lately. There are a couple on the Fresno CL for under $750, one of which is $300. Just a suggestion and if you're serious about doing the swap, I'd pick up the BBC, collect parts and rebuild it over some time while you still have the Olds to go out and have some fun with.

Try eBay on that 455.

Why are you taking the olds out? Are you tired of a reliable motor?
Reliable yes, but cleaning up the oil gets old.
Plus the risk of having the oil catch fire on your headers.
Cleaning dry chemical of your engine sucks:)st
I wasn't even WOT.

I know there are things to that can be done to prevent this and that it can happen to a chevy.
But I think Olds are more prone to this and it takes more work to fix it.

If you got the space and patience, I think Cas has a good plan.

I have a bunch of Chevy parts in the shop waiting for the Olds to give up...

They're getting rusty! :D

Do you run a PCV valve??
I do have a pcv valve on the left valve cover. As for the rebuilders my problem with that is the motor mounts, flywheel cover, will all have to be changed out, as I am lookin for something with those parts included. I think I may have found one here in New Mexico with everything I need, even old school motor mounts like mine (two point like in a car). It is a running 454, but I have not checked the compression yet, oil is clean and no milk. This has been my problem with the olds, one intake gasket failure and one head gasket failure, running a bypass now. I will post the casting numbers on the 454 block and heads, you guys tell me what you think.

What oil are you running in the Olds? I've gone to 10-40 Valvoline Dura Blend and can't seem to get any oil out of the covers. Oh well, it probably just has too much blowby.

Hope that Chevy works out for ya!

I had on Olds, was going to replace it with a Chevy. I found it was cheaper to rebuild the Olds with Edelbrock, or mondelo heads. Call joe Mondello. They are still in business done in So CAl. The olds it a lighter motor and produces more torque.

location, location, location

My locaton is most of my problem, Alamogordo New Mexico. I have to travel over 150 miles to the nearest lake big enough to be able to ski and boat at over 1/4 throttle. The Air force base here decided to make a "lake" that not to many folks know about here yet, but the only thing you are supposed to take on it is jon boats and such. I have snuck out there twice to test out carb adjustments, but the pond just aint big enough for a real boat.

I have a new project on my hands anyway, When I took out the seats I discovered the screws that were used to bolt down the seats, hotfoot, and diverter control were too long and they broke the "skin" on the encapulated flatation foam under my floor. The foam had so much water in it that water woulld squirt out when i threw a screwdriver at it. I tore the floor out, removed all the foam, and have cut and put a sealing coat of resin on the new floor. I bet I lost 200-250 ponds of foam and water. I bet that will bring my speed up quite a bit, as it was only 55 at 4300 rpm.

I would post pics but something is wrong with the attatchments doohicky.

doohickey workin again

Motor coming out (yep, thats my shop, nicest thing i own, My buddies girl and her soda, beers were in hand at this point.), motor on the floor, New floor with one coat of resin, and a pic while I was tearing out the old floor and the water logged foam. I will look into the aftermarket heads thing, and does a set of aftermarket heads completely solve the oil return path thing?

WOW!! thats a bit of work. Nice shop!!!
Thanks mike, It is the main reason i bought an eighteen footer, it fits in the shop without being on a diagonal and you can still walk all the way around it. The foam is all out, but the leak in the roof on my house took priority (my girlfriend just cant understand priorities:rolleyes:). I will start work on it again on sunday.

My first boat had an Olds ( wish I still had that boat), I had the shop drill holes on each head for drain backs. I never had a problem.
