I found a local project boat (no idea what type yet) on Craigslist today with an Olds 455... I could really care less about the boat, but are the Olds 455's good building engines? This will be my first engine build, so I'm looking for something that will have readily available parts. I'm wanting the engine for my 78 Hurst, but if the boat has potential, I may just complete it. I guess I'll have to cross my fingers that the engine isn't destroyed as well.

Thanks in advance guys!

You will be better off building a BBF or BBC. Pass on it.

Even though I have a Ford in my boat, I'd have to say the Chevy is the most desireable engine to have with the Ford in second. The Olds has some issues, mainly an oil starvation problem and a lack of affordable aftermarket parts. The same could be said about jet pumps as well. There are certain ones to avoid such as the Jacuzzi. Do your homework before you buy.

This is a very easy question.....NO

Don't even think about building that engine, especially for your first engine build. Guaranteed to have oil problems, unless you really know them well and know how to address the issues. But even then the time, money and effort is not worth the reward.
