when i accelerate, be it quickly or gradual, when im getting up to speed the boat pulls (for the life of me i can remeber what side) to one side, and when im slowing down, it pulls to the opposite side. im running a volvo 290 out drive, everything seems tight as far as the steering, not much play at all in the out drive. boat is set up for power steering, but is not plumbed for it currently. im not sure where else to look.

Hi Jeff,, my volvo outdrive (250) does the exact same thing while accelerating. When I take off hard WOT the boat pulls way hard to the left and I have to continuoulsy "counter steer" until I slow down and ultimatley stop..

Haven't noticed a dramatic pull opposite when I let off though,, the boat seems to continue in a straight line with no opposite steering needed.

I'd be interested to see what others say too.

Mine will pull hard to the left and I have to counter steer about a full rotation to the right and then its fine, but when i slow down I have to do the opposite.

No power steering in mine at all. A full rotation of the steering wheel to correct? Whoa mine isn't that bad, I would say maybe a 1/4 turn at most otherwise it would jut pull left. While under power it feels like a really bad aligned car keeping it going straight.

You guys may want to check your torque tab on the bottom of the cavitation plate on your outdrive.

If it is adjusted too much, it will give the symptoms you describe. The prop wash will torque it to one side, but when you let off, the torque swings the other way. It is VERY sensitive to adjustment, and sometimes moves on its own. I've even had one snap off.

Make sure it is dead straight, and give it a try. If you have to move it, mark the tab and cav plate with a pen, and only move it in 1/8" increments. Once you get it as close to neutral as you can, lock washer and Locktite the allen bolt.

My old Volvo varied the torque-steer depending on the type of prop and/or trim levels. The torque tab helped neutralize it a little, but only power steering eventually eliminated it.

sooo......lets say hypothetically, this guy i knew forgot to install that torque tab you mentioned. could that cause the pulling issues ? on a side note, do they make torque tab sacrificial anodes ?

Tell that guy you know that he's a loser for leaving it off! lol...

Yes, without the torque tab, cable steering gets very funky. Not sure about the anodes? I just remember it being a hunk of aluminum with a stainless allen bolt.

haa,, Ok,, so I will be the first to admit the loser status... What is the torque tab? I don't remember seeing any aluminum on the bottom or side of the drive since I got the boat last year. should it be under the water line?

It's a small fin that is right above the prop and right below the cavitation plate. Should be a hole smack dab in the middle where the tab bolts up.

I'll take a look and a picture when I get home, but the only thing I remember seeing right above the prop on my drive was the small fin thing that the exhaust comes through. Might be a totally different setup than what you have though.

This is what it looked like on my old drive:



I've seen older drives with a different kind, but basically, they all work the same. The prop wash over the fin holds the drive straighter when the prop is trying to torque it over.

Thanks for the pic, that helps alot.. I think that is a newer or at least a different model drive than I have. If I remember correctly from the diagrams that I have seen, the exhaust goes through the cav plate on that one correct? The little fin above the prop is the torque tab being mentioned..

Mine looks about the same only the cav plate is one solid piece, and the tab above the prop is where the exhaust would come through...

Talk about restricting a SBC exhaust.. I have the through transom tubes already and just waiting for the elbows to come in and some time to mount them.. if nothing else it will look cool, be a lot louder, and HOPEFULLY see some performance increase.

I have through transom duals and my boat screams. Great sound to it. your gonna love it. I'm going to be doing imco exhaust manifolds sometime soon. Can't wait. Your gonna love them. Will yours be submerged at all At idle? It's a bit loud for the little woman the way mine are now. Not that i care lol.

21 pitch prop and right now we max out around 45 with two adults, three kids, cooler and toys... I have a 57 Chevy station wagon with functioning lake pipes, and an 84 Shovelhead with drag pipes..

I have "cultured" my family into loud vehicles on all fronts! ! ! I think I will get away with them being about 2" above the waterline when at idle,, I'll look for a pic of the tips that I bought, they are supposed to be some sort of silencer too, but by the looks of it not much of anything.. Just the flapper that would ride back to the metal stop when water tried to enter the pipe.

I actually switched my exhaust to through-transom too (you can see the tips under the swimsteps). At idle, it was underwater, so it just sounded like you were in a jacuzzi...lol. When it got on plane, the motor sounded very nice.

I also eventually converted my transom shield to a newer model with trim:



I turned my old, tired Volvo 350 into a 383:



I think my best props were a 23 Turbo and a 25 Chopper from Hill.

why does your 383 look about a thousand times cleaner and sexier than my 383?? what manifolds were you running ? great looking motor. spotless.

Thanks! It dynoed over 460hp...what a great motor. Suprised a lot of people when they learned it was a mouse motor.

Those were EMI Thunder manifolds that I had polished. Probably saved at least 50lbs over those cast Volvo manifolds.

I wanted to be able to pop the hatch and not be embarassed- the problem is that I probably spent more on chroming, polishing, steel braided lines, etc. than the damn boat was worth...lol.

i might just bolt my hatch down so nobody can see my mess.

i took her out yesterday and the prop steer is almost completely gone. damn torque tab was really pullin its weight. im sure once i get my power steering sorted out it will be gone. that little 383 screams across the water yesterday. i am more than impressed. the aluminum prop that is on there now works great for tubing ans skiing. i can wait for a speed prop, this one will work for now. im still going to look into the jetting on the carb because im convinced its still jetted for colorado elevation. i might have a little power hidden somewhere in there. the only casualty was my trim pimp. the manifold below the motor on the pump cracked and was pissing fluid everywhere. it happened first thing in the morning, so all day the outdrive was trimmed all the way down. you think with proper trimming, the boat could possibly perform better? i dont know much about anything when it comes to proper trimming. the out drive that is.
