So i got the bearings back on and boat is trailer-able again. So its on to new projects.

While i was cleaning it and removing some oxidation i notices one of my cables seemed kind of screwy. its the cable that moves the place divert's forward and reverse shield. It looks like i drilled a 1 inch hole and used some sort of generic collar to surround the cable.

The issue is its not water tight and someone felt it was a good idea to use silicone to plug up the hole. It did not leak bad but in my mind any leak is a bad one and should be addressed.

What do you guys use to water tight your thru transom cables?

The second pic is after i removed all the silicone (aka clear caulk). You see a clamp on there and it was imbedded into the silicone i assume to stop it from moving back and forth as the forward and reverse is used.


Any ideas?

I have 3 of those same fittings on my "F" pump. If you take the outer plate off, you SHOULD find 2 plastic split-bushings in there with an O-ring in between them.

This setup takes up a tiny bit more room than the recess that is bored in the thick part of the cable seal, thus sealing the O-ring.

Mine also have accordion boots over them, lots of people leave them off after they weather badly tho.

It MAY (or more likely won't) prevent a cable from sliding, but it should seal anyhow.

The end of the jacket SHOULD be secured somehow other than depending on the TT seal to hold it in place. Are you missing a bracket someplace else?

Oh, and FYI, there should NOT be a clamp there. :)

Im gonna have to take this apart and re-read your post as you lost the crap out of me:)coffee. I have not yet gone any farther into this housing. If for some reason there is something rotten or missing from inside this housing can I order them?

I dont think it matters if it moves or not as the cable funcions just fine if it does. I think its just a matter of making it less water tight.

Follow this link to the Berkeley website's JE pump parts page. It shows a breakdown of what is inside the aluminum housing the cable passes through. There should be a bellows on there to help keep the water out.

Yep, as oldsquirt's link goes to the picture, the hole in the thick part of the seal (part # 55) is not smooth through.
There is a "lip" on the side away from the cover plate. That stops P/N 48 "seal bearing" from sliding completely thru (P/N 150-S16254 from CP Performance). The "seal bearing" is just a plastic/nylon split ring.

O-ring P/N 57, is sandwiched between these "bearings", held captive inside the "housing" by the "Seal Retainer" (P/N 56).
The bearing/O-ring/bearing stack-up is slightly longer than the hole in the "housing" part is deep, so is squeezed by putting the "retainer" on.

Once you take it apart, it'll be obvious (if you have all the parts). The link OS posted will help you if you are missing anything.

On that "E" (and My "F") the rev. cable jacket is locked in place by a clamp setup (P/N 84). Sliding in the seal does not occur.

I see whats on that page but mine looks like the bracket for the cooling inlet vs the the other housing. i think i just need to pull the SOB apart. would Berkley carry the replacement internals for that housing, in case mine are old and dry rotted?

Yes, Berkeley(CP Performance) has the bellows and I'm pretty sure they have the parts for inside the aluminum cable housing. I bought that stuff for a friend's project a few years back. Just look at the exploded view directly above the parts list. You will see the bellows, the cable housing and plate, the o-ring and the two plastic bushings.

The round plate that seals the water inlet pipe is not the same as the plate on the cable seal housing. Look similar, but different size.

Sounds good. I got a sales contact at Berkley so ill buzz him if i need something. Ill be sure to measure everything and send photos if i do order something. Who ever put this boat together didn't exactly follow the factory guidelines with some of this stuff. :)grn


and your right. i was looking at the exploded view of the pump not the cables. the cable diagram is exactly what i got...

YOU DA MAN!!!

I have part 84 and this allows the reverse to function just fine.. Just at the bracket on the transom when you flex that cable she moves a little but. does not affect function of the jet but i thought it might cause issue with water tightness. ill pull it apart tomorrow and see what i got..


you guys are the best. Hope all my issues have easy answers like this...

A bit of cable shifting is no big deal.

On thinking about it, it MAY slide in and out a bit with the steering.

I RTV the housing to the hull. If the O-ring is a good, tight, fit, it won't leak. They DO flatten after a while and then do start to leak. The accordion boots help.

It is designed to move. That is why it also has a bellows on it.
