In a nut shell, going through a basically stock 454 (headers, manifold, 750 holley) that is in a 20' Cole I/O. It will be getting a small cam this time around. Question is, it has peanut port ovals. What gains can be expected going to rec port heads (990's). Have to do the heads anyway and can up grade for a few hun.

Thanks

go with some 049's big oval ports, leave the rect ports for someone who's gonna rev high nuff to use em;)

Mild porting = 450+ HP capable, but waste of time and money. Normal oval ports with big valves and pocket porting = 575+ HP capable and your best bet. Square ports = 675+ HP capable w/porting and too big for your deal, and they will kill the gas mileage, along with throttle response. We are in Avondale,Az(west Phx) and specialize in jetboat engines and pumps. Call during business hrs, ask for TIMM and we can discuss your goals. Make sure that you curve your distributor too, most that we have seen don't provide the best power or mileage for boat use. We have core heads and are also W/D for everybodies parts, and there are some real bargains out there currently. We have built quite a few engines for river dwellers, call for references. We have a complete machine shop and perform ALL operations in house for engines and pumps. TIMINATOR 623-877-8553

If you're gonna stay in the 4000-6000 RPM range, the large ovals will be just fine. Casting numbers 049 and 781 seem to be the most popular ones. I agree with Timinator on having them set up with the rec port valves though (2.19" intake/1.88" exhaust) and decent gains have been reported from people who have had mild port work done to 049s.

My boat originally came with 990's and they worked just fine. On this new motor, which isnt anything close to what the original was, I went with Edelbrock oval ports. Being that the engines are so different, they arent really comparable, but this new mill is very responsive, and I'm sure that the oval ports contribute to that...

As Timm said, get large ovals, rectangles are way too big unless you plant to be spinning that 454 in the 7-grand ballpark, and the large ovals (like my 049's) are best served with a mild porting clean-up and the large valves mentioned above.

My 454 had no work done 2 winters ago but mild head port/valve replacement on it's original 049's.
Intake, cam, and exhaust had already been uprated, the heads were choking it.
Throttle response was always excelent, is now amazing, and 400RPM was gained against the same Aggressor B impeller pump build (as I said, not a thing changed but the heads).

I spin 5400 off the nitrous, idle at 850.

You should be able to find used stock ones fairly cheaply, not many hundreds for the pair.

We have oval port head cores, and have many aftermarket heads in stock or available. We can install the bigger valves, unshroud the chambers, flowbench test, surface them and borenotch your block too. Big midrange and up gains! I am in Havasu at least once a month too. We can pickup and deliver your boat for you from Avondale/Havasu. Next trip will be next weekend. TIMINATOR 623-877-8553

I wish you'd cool it with the spamming. This is a tech section, not the classifieds. Send the guy a PM or something.

I'd like to have a seccond song Steel (the Taylor is not anywhere near for sale).
No affording one.
Lowrider is garage-bound this year as gasoline to feed her is out of reach (as is the final step in pump repairs from breaking the nozzle last August). $500 disposable is hard for me to find these days.

Please include cashiers check for USD 10,000 with future requests and I will buy a seccond song.

Make cashiers check for USD 15,000 and I will not only get 2nd song, but will build engine, and use a set of your ported '049 heads on it.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter Steelcomp.

thanks Steel, forwarded info to my friend. He has a nice polished dual plane mani that has the little ports (like 1.6h x 1.7w) do you think I can just open them up to the 049 match or new mani?
Depends on the application, as usual. A dual plane with those small runners isn't going to get the most out of the ovals, but if it's a low rpm deal, then it really doesn't matter. If he wants to build some respectable power, even down the road he might upgrade to something more comparable to the heads. Just opening up the intake to match the ovals wouldn't gain anything unless the entire runner was enlarged. The nice thing is, even if he was to use the dual plane as is, IT would be the limiting factor of the engine, and could always be swapped out easily enough. The heads, once on the engine, could take pretty much anything you wanted to throw at them up to about 650hp.

Aw now, c'mon Smokin...you could change spark plugs and make that story last at least a year. :D
All in fun. Sorry to hear about hard times...I think we're all in the same boat (pardon the pun) right now. Worst thing that can happen is losing your sense of humor!:)hand
