After a starter issue that has been taken care of with replacement, there is now a spot on the ring gear that is missing a few teeth. It's a 454 with a berkely 12jc pump. Has rockwell h beam drive line. My driveline case has a larger access door that I can get to the u joints. By the packing a on the case the case has a lower clamp. With removing the u joint and unbolting the case can I replace the ring gear with the flywheel still bolted in without pulling the motor?

The ring gear is part of the flywheel/flexplate. Is your bell housing cover removable or is it part of the rear motor mount

I know it's a part of the flywheel, but it is also removable and replaceable. Ill have to look at the housing a little more closely tomorrow.

The ring gear is pressed onto the flywheel. You will have to remove the flywheel in order to press the old gear off and press the new gear on.

I won't be so bold as to say there is no way to do it, but in the end it would be easier to pull the flywheel.

If you can support the back of the engine you may be able to remove the bellhousing and flywheel without pulling the engine. Possibly you may need to move the engine forward a few inches.

Yea I know they are pressed on. But with the amount of given room, figure I and cut through the old one, heat it, tap it off, heat the new one on the bench and put in on.

With the concept of the ring gear will saw through your boat in a heartbeat! I would pull it, toss it right into the trash and buy a new SFI approved flexplate/flywheel and not worry about it! To each thier own!

I am not being insulting or have any reason to but you need to ask your'e self is it worth taking the risk? Replace the flywheel or flex plate and have piece of mind! Also if it has a flywheel and not a flexplate now would be a real good time to make that change. If by chance it is an internally balance engine then hopefully you can dig up the balance card and keep things right! If it's externally balanced it won't matter. Just do it right and save the grief later! JMO

I would think it would be easier to pull it out, replace the flex plate, and put it back in than it would be to try to lift the engine enough to remove the bellhousing (assuming it's a 3 point), heat and remove the ring gear, replace the ring gear, and then reassemble. It's also a lot safer and reliable in the long run. Redoing something second time is a lot more expensive than doing it right the first time.

The guy I bought the boat from had inherited from his brother who passed away. He knew the motor was rebuilt.4 years ago And that the crane cam and valve train was put in at that time. He didnt know the extent of the rebuild it knew the pistons were re- ringed and the bottom end had be gone through. He didnt find any paper work when he got the boat stating what was all done.

There is nothing wrong with replacing a ring gear. There is ZERO risk of some violent explosion or some other bullshit horror stories on this thread.
I've done it multiple times.

HOWEVER!!! Your not going to do this in the boat for a couple reasons
First, if its a IRON wheel with a steel ring gear, you need to shit can the wheel NOW!! If you like I can dig up a couple exploded IRON flywheels from THESE forum pages alone. Not a ring problem, a flywheel material problem. AND IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DESTROY YOUR BOAT AND TURN IT INTO TRASH FOR A LAND FILL!!!!

Second. If its a STEEL SFI rated flywheel, I doubt it has a removable ring gear, and if it does, it comes off the REAR of the flywheel, and is pressed up against a step in the edge of the wheel. Even if you cut the old one off, how do you get the new one on? There are a few STEEL wheel that have pressed on ring gears. I DOUBT THIS ONE OF THEM!!

If its a alum wheel, which I can see from the pics is not, then the ring gear is pressed and BOLTED to the back of the wheel, and you still have to remove it.

Bottom line, pull the engine, and replace the WHEEL!!!!

I think you meant to say the ring gear comes off the "Front" side of a manual trans style flywheel. Even if one "cut" the ring gear off, the flywheel would have to be off to be able to press the ring gear back on. The "front" of the flywheel is the side with the crankshaft flange.


OP, you don't have the option of replacing the ring gear without removing the flywheel and I guarantee that is the much easier way to approach the situation at hand.

I was not being sarcastic with the question but serious about the why. The only reason I can come up with is if you are leaning on the timing hard and "pumping the switch for fire up". Other than that would be a bad gear mesh to start with?

Because I'm freekn OLD. But at least my mind still functions!!! Not one wheel Mark, MULTIPLE wheels. Not in a couple years. Over a period of numerous DECADES!!! Some of which were bought BECAUSE they needed a ring gear and were bought cheap. One which was changed to use a rear mounted reverse rotation starter!!

I have gapped and installed MULTIPLE sets of rings, and mulitple set of bearings. Rebuilt numerous carbs. Rebuilt a few blowers. But not all in the same engine.

Make sense NOW??

So to pull the motor, hook it up to a hoist, disconnect fuel line, water line from pump, exhaust hoses, remove mounts, unbolt case, unbolt clamps by packings and slide the the motor forward of the driveline splines?

I will replace the flywheel with a SFI certified one since I don't know how this motor is balanced.
